I wear both. Shorts mainly when I need pockets for phone/keys, if that's not an issue, pants.
TLD GP Air pants have a mesh fabrict in strategic places and it keeps you cooler than shorts.
I'm currently building on a Sunday frame and on paper, its 37lbs. and that's not with the most lightest parts... but ofcorse, let's see what's it at on a real scale.
I don't think that going huge and using a bodyarmor are connected that much.
If you are a beginner, your don't have to go big to F up really bad. If you are just starting, use a bodyarmor. When you have got some skill, then you can look at what's you doing and then decide if you need one.

have had no problems with my 5.10s. 1st pair of 1gen samhills still going strong after 3 years. also got the karvers for the second year now. I always take both pairs with me when going out to ride, that way I can put on a "new" clean and dry shoe when needed.

My vote also for the tld moto. I wouldn't say they are baggy. They have 3 pockets, so good for park riding. For next season, will also look up a pair of sprints (in need of some red shorts).
If you can have only one pair of shorts, then I would only look at shorts with pockets, a bit more...
