Went for a short ride today and did a small drop and heard a massive crack on landing. Turns out it was chainslap on rebound because my hub decided it wouldn't frewheel, took my wheel off and my cassette fell off.
If you rode through a rocky section that didn't require any braking the bite point on your lever would be closer to the bar when you go to use the brakes for the first couple of times. As my wheel deflected off rocks it seemed to move my rotor axially which was pushing my brake pads apart.flexing at the sheared area? brake pads spreading? tell us more please, because I'm not sure how to contextualise what you said. Pics maybe?
so you saying it's not only americans who cant speak englishIf you rode through a rocky section that
Does this help? Oh yeah I'm Australian, no more words like contextwhatever please.
Exactly. It is ridiculous to get so worked up about a broken part. **** happens, parts break...yes, even JRA.this is what the manufacturing industry refers to as a "statistical outlier"
Here's some more "stop picking on the industry" whining mindset. Let him post whatever pics he wants to. Why be scared of what Hope may think about bad press? Hopefully (durhur..) they will respond appropriately (if warranted), the OP will go through his dealer and follow proper procedure for getting this checked out.Prob. get' a better response from Hope if you don't put pics up all over the web showing they're product broken. Ask them the same question.
In my opinion, a far more likely scenario is that the axle has been broken for a while, causing the excessive movement you describe. Only now has the flex in the area caused the freehub to seize. This happened to me on a bulb hub. I bought a set of bearings thinking the play was just an indication the bearings were shot. I went to change them and one half of the axle came out one side of the hub, and the other came out the opposite side. I've had several other Hope hubs and I'd definitely agree that thee instances are few and far between. If you rode through a rocky section that didn't require any braking the bite point on your lever would be closer to the bar when you go to use the brakes for the first couple of times. Where the axle snapped was between the DS hub bearing and the inner freehub(?) bearing.
The bike this hub is on is my first dually so I didn't know if any movement at the disc was normal if you give the wheel a decent push or pull, I just figured it must have been the swing arm flexing.

I have to agree with ridefast here. Boo freakin hoo, a product broke and there are pictures.Prob. get a better response from Hope if you don't put pics up all over the web showing they're product broken. Ask them the same question.
Is that why there are not in stock at CRC!Unfortunate to say the least... However I am sure that Hope will get you sorted out.
I've ridden Hope hubs for over 2 seasons now and just ordered 2 sets of wheels on Hope hubs this morning... I'm not too worried about them failing.
Haha sorry about that... They have been out of stock forever, then I noticed they had gold last night. I can deal with gold.Is that why there are not in stock at CRC!

I was about to type that I wasn't getiing worked but yeah I guess I am, however my hub was used for three months as were my carbon bars that cracked the week before. I have spent quite a bit building tis bike up and I am pissed that almost everything I've bought is rubbish. I know I am well overweight but I am fairly smooth I managed to race a whole DH hardtail season on a pair of Syncros DS-28 rims.Exactly. It is ridiculous to get so worked up about a broken part. **** happens, parts break...yes, even JRA.
We expect these expensive bike parts to last, which they should. But there are failures in any product category. Add in the fact of constant thrashing and (more likely than not, improper maintainence) the forces that the components experience, there are going to be failures. Accept it.
The best thing that can come from having the pics posted will be that the sport get better products through real life feedback and making improvements. Worst case? OP is out a rear wheel.
Why is that? I have never had a problem with people posting pictures of broken parts. It can potentially save someone from serious injury being aware of a possible defective part. Isn't this is what these forums are all about? To discuss the good and the bad? There was no negativity directed towards Hope. Hope is a great company, with great customer service.Prob. get a better response from Hope if you don't put pics up all over the web showing they're product broken. Ask them the same question.
Are you using a Maxle Lite? If so, there's your problem.Well another axle died today, probably only got 15 or so rides on this one, since I got my replacement frame I have not taken any drops or big jumps as I have been babying my bike so it lasts the remainder of the racing season. Oh well, back on the hardtail for a bit I guess.
This time yes, I was running a lite as I was sent one by accident, my original Maxle wouldn't hold tension for some stupid reason so. I was meaning to replace the Maxle with a SS bolt but I have been lazy. Are you using a Maxle Lite? If so, there's your problem.
However, that particular kind of failure is reasonably common with Hope hubs even when not paired with The Worst Axle In The F**king World. The newer axle design seems quite a bit stronger though.
Broken axel twice? How heavy are you? This time yes, I was running a lite as I was sent one by accident, my original Maxle wouldn't hold tension for some stupid reason so. I was meaning to replace the Maxle with a SS bolt but I have been lazy.
Hope should state not for use with Maxle or Maxle light in the product description to stop people like me costing them money.
96kg, so pretty heavy but I think if you weigh over 60kg you could snap one pretty easily if you are running a Maxle.Broken axle twice? How heavy are you?
The ProII was out well before the Maxle or Maxle Lite; in reality SRAM should pull those things off the shelf, melt them down and create some kind of abstract art out of them. They are simply unbelievably ****, in fact it just makes me angry that such crap products ever made it to market. Seriously makes me think they didn't EVER test the things in the real world before selling them, not even for half an hour. This time yes, I was running a lite as I was sent one by accident, my original Maxle wouldn't hold tension for some stupid reason so.
