Excuse the mumbling and miserable, unintelligible (don't worry. It's dull as fuck anyway) chat but here's Mark Scott out for a wee ride on just one of those old flattened (local) scottish hills mentioned earlier.

Thats brilliant. What a mad unit.

also, wtf is wrong with scottish bike shops? than one is filthy af
That one is wild but I gotta say, I miss old bike shops that have that sorta vibe to them. I grew up working and loitering around in independent privately owned shops that always had a mishmash of stock and tools from 20 years of operation. Here in Oz a lot of the independent have been taken over by the chain stores or the manufacturers (trek, giant, speshy) and turned into these soulless clean spaces with stock control and no beer in the fridge.

Goodness gracious. I go on vacation and can't even keep up.

Notes:

1) I only eat at elevansies, not first or second breakfast. You nerds should know what I'm talking about.

2) When I roll up on regular bikes on the eeb, it depends. Usually I'll just hang back and drink water. God knows I need it, cuz I'm usually hung over anyway. :) But if I'm on a jam and it's like tech where the eeb is obviously superior. I'll just give them a shout and usually they're cool about it. Most people are actually curious about the bike. So sometimes I actually communicate with other trail users in a positive manner. Image that! :) (At this point I'm just happy to not be eaten by a giant kitty or a crazy guy with a hatchet, so there's that.)

3) Oh and the TQ motor Trek is absolutely awesome. It's quiet. It's light. And if I run out of battery, it's like riding a heavy enduro bike. Which I totally know about. It is only 360wh. And an extender is not cheap. Hmm...we'll see.

I love a good ev. And I'm a fact based decision maker.

But really tho. All the petroleum going into mining the materials for batteries. Etc. Etc. It still costs gas to make electric. And it still costs something to charge the electric. So are we at least at net neutral? I doubt it. I'm pretty sure it still costs petroleum to make electric. So what are we really saving?

All the Tesla and Rivian owners are gonna shoot each other for time at the electric pump. And I'm gonna be like see ya suckers! I filled up in less than ten minutes on my way to the slopes! Good luck going over 2 mtn passes to ski on that thing!

:D

lol They're not talking about e-mtbs that get driven to trailheads, though.
My e-mtb has led to me riding more

and I exhale CO2. And will probably live longer due to the exercise

therefore the world is getting worse because of it, objectively

Were you just climbing over overpasses before? Where did those Peloton watts go?
I ride the same trails as before. Just more often, and maybe adding in extra out and back bits or the like. And I certainly bike commute and do errands about town much more regularly with the e-commuter.

Until the mountains get no more snow due to climate change. Thanks, I'm glad you saved your 20 minutes.

It was nice of the disinterested party known as *checks notes* "rivian" to pay for that.

How many electric car batteries last 16 years and still hold a charge? Not to mention landfill leader tesla...

Plus, we've already been over this (multiple times) but there's a market for repurposing batteries that are no longer suitable for EV use, notably as utility-scale energy storage.

christ, I'd forgotten how bad google is

that's even more industry propaganda than what rivian wants out there

you want to address the question or just guide me to more ads masquerading as hawt industry 'news'?

pretty much every electric bike made falls short of their claims when tested

The only real long term durable ev cars that sold in large numbers still out there are probably prius batteries. And they pretty much all need new ones pre-2010

That is a good point. I'm not buying it, tho. How many covid shots have you had? :D

Out here, it depends. Yeah, if you're the grocery getter, and that's all. EV for sure. Heck, I'd rather just drive a golf cart and drink a beer to the store. I don't need a $70K fancy pants ev auto for that. Golf cart will suffice. Seriously. If they just made that legal... :D

But if you're serious about getting to the back country for some real riding? You will need fuel. Or the patience to charge up. I've got friends in both camps. I'm still leaning towards petroleum. Have you driven amazingly long distances for your ski/bike/vacation things? Perhaps Denver to Moab? Denver to Sedona? We're talking at least 5 hours, That is 2 mtn passes at a minimum, plus all the miles. No battery(s) is gonna last that. My cell phone barely lasts that.

And it's not 20 minutes to charge. Think more like 40, if you can just roll up. If you're waiting for your turn. Way more. Hey, if that's your jam. Welcome to it. It's easy to poopoo an extra 20 minutes due to electric vs gas. If that's your jam, do it.

You are literally guinea pigs right now. Not that I'd shy away from guinea pigging a jump. But if my family is involved? I'll just get gas and get to Moab/Vail/Steamboat lickety fucking split.

I'm just saying....is the ev movement actually moving any needle anywhere? I don't see it...yet.

I know that place it's right by here.

It's one of tesla's bros who started it. Propped up by an eager governor all too willing to create another tax haven for silicon valley bux, on the gov't teat

It's amazing to me that you don't get the same flashback to the 90s-early 2000s when the entire plastics industry had convinced the world that it was okay to keep using single use packaging because it could be recycled. Which is only now being discussed honestly.

Free energy on those recycling plants? 100% recovery?

If electric boosted bicycles get people out of cars, that's great. The energy expenditure across the entire spectrum is reduced, especially compared to pushing some heavy ass telsa around.

But you're living in a fantasy world that doesn't exist yet if you think this is a completely reclaimed energy cycle that doesn't depend on fossil fuels and still produce massive amounts of waste. The primary product is easing your conscience regarding consumption. It's obviously working. With the bonus side of smug...

My dirtbike is 13 years old. You really want to talk about what's a more durable good compared to the vast majority of ebikes being sold right now?

EV consumers do seem to be gullible AF and also coincidently by and large the same people who'll always buy/lease a new car every few years so in reality have zero grasp on their actual carbon footprint. Even RIDIAN's stupid ball chart manages to show their reality as ignorant/selfish cunts!

How can you blindly believe an EV battery lasts between 10 and 20 yeears without any quantification as to how many miles and in what conditions the thing was driven or charge cycles etc. or what "lasts" even means? Especially when the same first Google "search" hit tells us
(the battery in a standard internal-combustion engine vehicle lasts between three and five years)
LOL

dude, you are talking to someome who only uses public transport, because he lives in the swiss super wonderland. i‘m the proto sustainable uber mensch. everything powered i use is powered by 100% hydro power. your arguments are invalid.

Reality is a bitch
The types of energy most used are petroleum products, electricity from hydroelectric and nuclear power plants, and natural gas.

it's a well known fact that Swiss Public transport uses no fuel or power either in daily operation or manufacturing.

I overproduce over the year with my 13.94 kW of PV on my roof. sure, there was a carbon cost in their initial manufacture and transport, but from what I read that was paid back in year 1.

therefore, my electric-driven pursuits are nearly carbon-free wrt each additional mile.

(I also pay Xcel in theory for RECs for a utility scale PV plant they run, via Renewable*Connect. the funny thing is that most months the production credit for that actually exceeds the cost. so being in that program pays me a tiny bit. won't complain about that.)

and 'woo, your old dirtbike is a 2 stroke, right? that has a whole can of emissions issues, no? longevity aside.

100% hydro power:

thats what sustainable living looks like
That system you personally built is very impressive, I can understand your pride

You guys exist on a grid just like the rest of the world (cept for texas but we don't talk about that)

Part of my job is the water side of hydropower production audits. You'll get no argument from me about its value. It's almost the perfect energy source. We have this little problem though.

Another leg of smug short sightedness that you'd probably be really into if you lived here, given your propensity for gullibility.

anyway, if you account for all the externalities, nothing is without a cost. e-bikes included. or living.

but they are fun, legal in many places, and while they may enable n00bs without trail etiquette to get out there they aren't the source of such lack of trail etiquette. so I'll continue to ride mine happily around the front range.

Not really, it just makes a visible smoke from bean based oil so everyone who doesn't know how motors work think it's 'moar polloooshuns'. It's like candle wax smoke.

2strokes actually produce less nitrogen oxides (acid rain/smog stuff) than 4 strokes. That's part of why catalytic converters were made, to clean that shit out of 4 stroke emissions. And why you never see them on 2strokes.

Where two strokes get messy is if they're overfueled or don't run well. They can spit more unburnt fuel out, which is obviously nasty. Ironically getting 4 strokes to run better in terms of fuel efficiency involves valve timing that introduces the same issue.

Good running two strokes can actually be more efficient and less polluting than 4strokes depending on what you're talking about pollution-wise. F1 is even talking about going back to them for fuel efficiency. All of it makes CO2 obviously.

I buy smaller motors so mine gets like 43ish mpg. A gallon of gas is a good ride. Way less than the shit my tacoma burns driving to a trailhead for nonmotorized recreation™

whole europe is one big comnected power system, yes. and switzerland also has nuclear plants. i still pay extra for the source of the power i buy, which is hydro only. my utility buys that power on the spot market for me.

The only way to do that would be buying off an isolated supply, that only pulls from a hydro plant or plants. Maybe you are, I don't know

But that's not how grids work. You're probably paying for an atta boy sticker that allows greater purchasing of hydro.

I rode yesterday and about 10-12 ebikes passed me over two laps. I found that quietly making a "rrRRrrRtrRrrrr" sound while climbing gave me a satisfying feeling of inclusivity.

of course i wont get my electrons from the hydro plant, but from the nearest available source. yet, if more and more ppl demand with their wallets only sustainable plants remain. and thats the goal…

also, i have one more thing to make fun off americans with their inefficient way of everything in life. btw, how many kwh does your uninsulated paper marche house waste use?

are you under the impression I live in a tent?

You sure like to take credit for things you had nothing to do with.

We worship at the altar of capitalism and quarterly returns. It has nothing to do with stupidity like you want so badly to believe and everything to do with greed from people no one here can stop. If you think I'm going to defend that, you really aren't that bright. You want to blame americans personally for the shit system we inherited, while taking credit for one you inherited.

Although your incessant need to brag about your superiority will absolutely fuel making more nazi jokes at your expense.
