If sea otter, a pretty pedally course (I know, I know, a joke race, especially compared to worlds!) was any indication, I dont think lopes will 'win' but I think he'll do well. There are any number of guys I would be spruced to see winning it.

I am very curious to see what happens this year.

I would love to see Gwin win it or at least make the podium. If that doesn't happen, I would like to see Peat or Hill take it.

When will it be on for us US guys? Thursday night?

I'm betting everybody is riding their DH bikes save lopes, who's riding the mojo HD.

There was talk of sam and brendog riding their SXT's, but after a full season on demo's, I think switching bikes up for worlds is unlikely.

If lopes wins on his short travel bike, the worlds will never return to Can-bra. Or at least it shouldn't.

The World Champs usually never returns to the same venue twice, Mont Sainte Anne next year will be the first time the World Champs will return to the same venue. Anyway, Lopes ain't gonna win.

I'm all for Peaty. He is THE man and needs to win champs. However, I'd love to see Gwin win too! America!

was worlds at vail twice? i know 2001, but wasn't there worlds there in like 1994 or something? not trying to one-up, just curious.

i think lopes has actually has potential to do quite well (podium would not be surprising).

I'm rooting for Lopes, would be hilariously cool if he won it, though I don't see it.

Just checked, on the ball you are, Francois Gachet won the DH worlds in '94 at Vail, then Nico in '01 at Vail again.

As for Lopes, he probably does have the potential to do quite well, as he does have some serious bike skill and strength. But just goes to show I think that this track is not really acceptable as a DH WORLDS test in the modern age. Not to wank on all over the internet I'm gonna use a quick analogy.

Imagine if for the Downhill event in the 2011 Alpine Skiing World Champs that the track was so short, flat and "un-downhill" that a 3-4 year retiree Slalom specialist skier could come out fo retirement and have a realistic shot at smoking most of the current DH skiing stars? That would just never happen as it would not live up to the heritage and prowess of what a true DH event is all about.

Now some of you will whine on about DH bike having pedals and stuff...blah, blah, blah. DH needs classic events and classic mountains, just like Moto/Skiing etc... The racing in Canberra is gonna be as awesome as ever, but it blows balls that it's a World Champs. At least the UCI realise the need for classic venues and are working to always have the likes of Schladming/Maribor/MSA/Fort William and hopefully Champery or Val di Sole too.

some of the 2008 footage on vitalmtb really makes the course look super flat and not horribly technical. if this is the case, strong pedalers like lopes have a very good chance. i suspect most folks will run a "mini-dh" setup to cut weight and increase efficiency. i also wouldn't be surprised if some 4x racers cross-over and get top 20 finishes.

My Picks are:

Elite: Natahn Rennie. saw him the other day and he is looking really fit.
Elite Women: Tracy Mosley
4X Men: Jared Graves. Only person that could take his crown is Sam Willemby.
4x Women: Carolyn Buccanan: Carolyn is hard to beat at home.
Junior Men: Rhys Willemse. Saw this kid do a timed run last week in Canberra with the rest of the aussie juniors. He blew the rest away by 6 secs and wasn't even going flat out. After his 13th at Maribor, its hard to go past this kid.

kangaroo land.
i'm not sure the short travel bike is such a great idea, mainly due to being able to carry enough speed through the rock gardens (which are never shown on any footage).
I think you need all the travel you can get through those sections at the speed the riders hit them at and maintain it.
It's the kind of track that is very unforgiving if you make a mistake, unforgiving enough to make up time in the final 20 second sprint..who knows.
Interesting to see what unfolds

As for changes, some general re-alignment took place to increase speed as well as re-alignment to make the going over the biggest part of the g20 drop the fastest option(3 meter drop to tranny), some big jumps in the final section before the 4x hill (riders recorded at 65-70kmph in this jumping section, previously it was a slower pedally section), which leads more importantly into a lower entry for the final pedal along the side of the 4x hill, hopefully to carry that speed to the finish...if they have the legs.
i'm guessing some where around a 2.30 for the win, mainly from the extra speed at the last section of track compared to last year.

yeah, i agree with you. the track doesn't stoke me out as a good representation of DH.

check out 5 youtube vids from canberra...with all the small, aggressive, pumpy jumpy things, seems like lopes could do well. interesting comment above about the rocks and small bike, though.

Yep and yep. I was there for both of them! :D

I like the fact that the nice folks in Canbrah made such a nice bike park and all. But to quote Minnaaaaar, "Its not really a mountain." Kind of unfair to the racers. Especially if you consider Akula's analogy.

I am rooting for Rhys as well for the Jr. title.

Racing on a Tomac. Got to represent. =]

As for the live broadcast, what time is it playing here for us in the US?

For Sunday I started the the Jr's at 10:30. I wanted to see them and the ladies race at 13:00 before the Elite men start (14:00).

So Elite men would be at 9:00pm PST Saturday and Sunday 12:00am EST.

Just don't let it be Sam Hill...his interview smugness bugs me.
If he wins this one, there will be one excited sam hill and will be cool if he won and pulled a Rob Warner on the finish line interview and says "it's great to win, but this track is f-ing gay" (as Rob said when he won Kaprun fire road world cup).

Sam's always been like that, even before he was winning. Its just his personality.

I think it would be sick to see Sam win here, he needs a good single result this year, kinda like he would have got at Andorra.

This year could be anybody's. A far cry from the days of Nico and everyone trying to guess who'd get 2nd.
