Been there, done that. It has a crunchy texture to it, really hard to describe. Imagine crunchy raw squid and you are on a vector that is getting close.
Well, I don't know what all that disgusting crap is pictured above but...
We're now in the Louis Armstrong airport on our way home via Houston. It was a good trip! Quick, but a good time.
Thanks for the suggestions, they were all good. We actually ate at:
1st night:
Cajun Cabin: on Bourbon - awful - ripoff. I know, we got sucked into the "just landed" mentality. Well, awful might be an overstatement, but a ripoff might be an undestatement.
Day 2:
Central Grocery for Muffalettas: Awesome.
Cafe du Monde for beignets: Beignets were good, but the cafe au lait was okay...
Dick and Jenny's: Awesome. A little out of town, but that was a good thing. I had stuffed pork tenderloin with grits and the lady had braised lamb shank. Both meals were delicious. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding a la mode.
Day 3
Took a walk around City Park which was nice and quiet. Looked at some weird sculptures and got spoken to by over-eager tourists excited about the penis' on the statues.
Then we did a swamp tour and zipped around the swamp on an airboat. We didn't eat much until dinner. However, dinner was fantastic. We took a quick stroll over to Feelings Cafe. I had the much anticipated beef tenderloin stuffed with blue cheese. La Belle had pork tenderloin glazed in a dijon sauce. Both were served with asparagus and potatoes. Succulent!! Dessert was soooo good. Combination pie. It had the combination to the treasure chest of delicious!
Day 4
Walking tour of garden district, got hungry then decided it was time to finally have a Po Boy. We decided to try Mother's. I can see the attraction. Vancouver needs a sandwich place like that.
Then we checked out the zoo. Note to self: Don't bother going to zoos unless entertaining small children. It was nice, but those lazy animals just lie there and don't do tricks or anything. Bo-ring!
Got lucky and it happened that the Krew de Vieux parade was going on right near our BandB. So we grabbed a couple hand grenades and watched that. We'd already been endulging a fair amount in the booze, so we kinda took it easy and watched the world go by. Kinda fun. Then we got hungry and decided to try out the Gumbo Shop. We started off with some Cajun Bloody Marys and gator sausages. Reptilicious! There were actually better than I expected. Tasted like chicken... I had the Jumbalaya and La Belle had chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. Mmmm.
Then today, day 5, it was time to go, but we wanted to get another couple muffalettas for the road. But guess what! Central Grocery is closed on Sundays! Day of rest?! What a load of crap. So we tried out Frank's. It was almost as good. The bread wasn't quite as crispy delicious though... I wanted to pick up a jar of olive salad, but the price was kind of extorsionate. $14. I dunno, I'll learn to make it myself this summer...
And now, sitting here waiting for the flight chewing Orbit Sangria gum with leftover muffaletta getting soggy in my bag.
Again, thanks for the suggestions. Cochon will have to wait til next time. As will the Barely Legal Hustler Club. Oh well...
I have only been to NO once (pre-Katrina) but in addition to the places mentioned here, check out Casamentos for oysters and Cafe Atchafalaya for a full meal. I still dream about the crawfish-stuffed double-thick bone-in pork chop I had at Atchafalaya.
The thing is, all the other parades have huge floats pulled by tractors. They couldn't make thru the Quarter, much less with all the people there.
For the Krewe Du Vieux, floats are pulled by hand, horse, and the occasional pickup truck.
The throws for this parade are hilarious. The Krewe Du Jieux (that pronounced Jew) throws out painted bagels, and my favorite is pencils for the LEAP test, which grade schoolers had to pass in order to graduate to the next grade. The pencil had erasers at both ends...
cool thanks...id like to check out the WWII memorial. i didnt know they had one. i dont think id take pics there though.
i think ill take a extra day after my convention to check the city out
Arnauds Jazz Bistro. Excellent food. The staff was very professional. The restaurant was extremely quiet with massive windows looking out onto the busy, drunken street. The jazz musicians that played were incredible. It was a very cool experience. Food was great too. http://www.arnauds.com/arnauds_jazz_room.html

god damnt, i dont want to go to New Orleans...no offense to those who live or have lived there...but its for work. im gonna make the company pay for a extra two days to check the city out.
god damnt.
Definitely go to a parade, but I think it is a bit much. New Year's is my favorite holiday, and if I skiied, I would probably join the Krewe of Aspen (the people who leave town for Mardi Gras).
