As far as I know, they still work. Back in the day I bought those at the nearest bike shop (two hours away) that actually carried stuff other than beach cruisers with beer caddies. Every few months I would blow out the rear shifter and the manager would just replace it, no questions asked. Did that about three times.
I have a complete XT 8 speed drivetrain. New in the boxes new.
