* Engine & Drivetrain
* 170-hp SUBARU BOXER engine
* SOHC 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed (Boxer); aluminum cylinder block and heads, i-Active Valve Lift System (AVLS)
* Lineartronic™ CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) includes manual mode and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
* Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
* Active All-Wheel Drive - Models equipped with Lineartronic™ CVT utilize an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch to distribute power to where traction is needed. Sensors monitor parameters such as wheel slippage, throttle position and braking, to help determine torque distribution and direct it to the wheels with optimum traction.
* Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive - Models equipped with 5-speed automatic transmission utilize an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch in conjunction with a planetary-type center differential and a viscous-type limited-slip rear differential. Torque distribution is normally configured at a performance-oriented rear-wheel-biased 45/55-split front-to-rear. Sensors monitor parameters such as wheel slippage, throttle position and braking to help determine torque distribution and direct it to the wheels with optimum traction.
* Vehicle Dynamics Control
* VDC electronic stability control utilizes sensors which constantly monitor wheel speeds, steering angle, brake pressure, vehicle yaw rate and lateral g-forces. If VDC detects a difference between the driver's intended path and the one the vehicle is actually taking, VDC applies braking power and/or reduces engine torque to help correct vehicle path. Standard on all models.
* VDC also incorporates an all-wheel, all-speed traction control system which senses a loss of traction and applies braking force to the slipping wheel or wheels as necessary to maintain vehicle motion.
* Chassis & Brakes
* Steering Rack-and-pinion with engine-speed controlled variable power assist
* Suspension Front: MacPherson-type struts with internal rebound springs, lower L-arms, coil springs and stabilizer bar. Rear: Double wishbone with subframe.
* Brakes Power-assisted 4-wheel disc with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), 4-channel / 4-sensor ABS and Brake Assist.
* Safety - Active
* Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive sends power from the SUBARU BOXER® engine to each wheel, providing superior driving performance and enhanced traction to keep you safe on any road condition.

* Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
* Safety - Passive
* Airbags (SRS)
* Dual driver's and front-passenger's front airbags. Subaru advanced frontal airbag system with front passenger's seat occupant detection sensor. Side-curtain airbags protecting front and rear outboard occupants. Front-seat-mounted front side-impact airbags.
* Front Seat Head Restraints
* To help prevent whiplash, these seat restraints shift forward, cradling the head during a rear-end collision.
* Rear Head Restraints
* Three individual height-adjustable rear head restraints
* 3-Point Seatbelts
* Height-adjustable 3-point front seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters. 3-point seatbelts at all rear seating positions
* Rear child-safety door locks
* LATCH System: Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children
* Safety brake pedal system
* Ring shaped reinforcement frame
* The frame absorbs the energy of an impact from any direction and provides excellent protection in a variety of collision types.
* Energy-absorbing collapsible steering column
* In the event of a crash, the steering column accordions, minimizing the force of impact and reducing injury to the driver.
* Exterior
* Headlights
* Black door handles and side mirrors.
* Black-finish raised roof rails.
* 16 x 6.5-inch steel wheels with alloy-wheel-look covers.
* Aluminum-alloy rear gate with integrated spoiler.

In a van.... down by the river
* Manual transmission
* Standard fully synchronized 6-speed manual
* Automatic transmission
* Lineartronic™ CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) includes manual mode and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. 2.5i and 2.5i Premium: Optional. 2.5i Limited: Standard.
How in God's name did they fit 4 different transmissions in your car? That's asking for trouble if you want my opinion...

I'm not sure what kind of commute you have or how fast you drive; I have the same engine with a conventional 5 speed and routinely averaged over 30 MPG at 65 MPH when I was commuting. I'd be curious to know what you think of the CVT - if we decide to go for a 2010 I'm going to keep my Outback and trade our Accord in.

Edit: you've also pasted every spec or combination of specs possible... I was just curious what trim level you chose.

My commute is 34 miles each way with roughly half highway and half backroads. Of course tax season is coming up and when I leave the office after 8pm, my commute is much faster without traffic. The highway limit is 55 so I stick to 70 or under. As soon as I have to fill the tank i'll start tracking it better and let you know!

It has this gauge that tells you how you how you are doing at any given point in terms of getting good gas mileage. it's annoying. Woodsguy would love it!

premium level. the options right in the beginning are accurate though.

I hope the new ones are more comfortable to drive in for extended miles. Driving l's on the road for more than an hour the seat starts to torture my ass.

L's 2003 just clicked over 100k last weekend. It has been a great car.

Looks nice! I think the new body style will grow on me. How does it feel to drive a car with a CVT? (I prefer a manual, so the 6 speed option is the way I'd go).
i had a '09 Altima with a CVT and i thought it was okay for normal driving, but when you want to accelerate from stop or onto a highway, it stinks.
i dont know how reliable Subaru's CVT is, but Nissan has a ton of issues with theirs

edit: their cars have CVT's now?

I think the cvt has always been available in the high end 4cyl outback models. This is the first year they are standard in all models.

I'm definitely noticing the difference in acceleration but I don't live in the mountains and I really don't need the power.

The current outback/legacy is one of the first Subaru's in a long time in the US with a CVT.

I think the Justy was the last Subaru with CVT (the first car in the US market with a CVT).

Subaru Justy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Subaru_Justy_purple.jpg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e6/Subaru_Justy_purple.jpg/120px-Subaru_Justy_purple.jpg"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/e/e6/Subaru_Justy_purple.jpg/120px-Subaru_Justy_purple.jpg

For 2010, Subaru's CVT is the auto industry's first longitudinal, AWD configuration application on the market.

yeah i just looked it up now...all models except the 6cylinder it seems.
they take a bit to get used to, but they do have their benefits

Like increased complexity and higher failure rate? :p
i was skeptical about Nissan's reliability in their CVT and i was proven correct with issues of knocking or banging coming from the tranny....and the letter i got from Nissan issuing a extended warranty on the tranny and reimbursement for any service done to it, proved my theory

MBC, any updates on the Outback? Any issues that have come up?

I've also been watching for updates over on subaruoutback.org, and was just curious...
**knock on wood** everything's great! I know there are a lot of people over there complaining about a steering wheel shake but luckily mine is good!

My ride to work is a lot of highway so I'm averaging 30mpg. LOVING LIFE!
