I'm planning a little week end trip there with the GF sometime very soon but am not sure when yet. I've been giving a park bike quite some thought too but I can't afford anything else right now, and probably not for a good while neither.

Maybe we can meet up there that'd be very very cool!!!!!

Can't stop thinking/looking at the FQ. I'm dreaming of it in Black, with blacked out Shiver SC, everything black. You guys run 24's or 26's on those or is it an option? I'm assuming you can run a derailleur as well. Damn you bastards for showing me that.

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrr

dang that's exactly what happened to me. It kinda pulls you into a trance of some sorts. I honestly (go ahead and laugh) didn't sleep for quite a few nights.

You can only run a 24" rear wheel on the FQ, the chainstays are real short, and you can up to about a 2.8" tire in the back, although it starts coming real close to the arch in the swingarm (it's not the width that limits it, it's the length of the chainstays).
You can run a derailler on em too.

Is that thing full moto suspension? WHat kind of travel do you get from it.
Very cool!

EDIT: Now that bike truely deserves the "Ask me where the motor is and I'll punch you in the face" sticker!

I like my bikes small. I have a gack speed demon that is like an overgrown bmx with a 21" top tube and it fits me fine. You run a 24 or 26 on the front? I'm gonna be using mine specifically for street.

macmx would be your better advisor then, I'm 5'5, he's more in your height range. The bike is smaller for sure, it's real low too, but i think you would be just fine on it if you're used to BMX'ish style frames. I have a 26" front wheel on mine iwht a 6" 01 Super T and ride mine street 80% of the time. It's a perfect street and urban assault FS frame.

I'm around 6 feet. I have very long legs, but i can easily ride it. Depends on the setup you are running though. I would never dream of running a 6 inch fork and 26" front wheel like Shortbus. It would be like a harley for me. My setup with dual 24" and 5" fork (which the bike is made for) is great for me. I run pretty high bars though. Around 3.5 inch rise if you count risers and such. It works great with the Dorado SC like I have. The Shiver would be nice too but it is more plush and less rigid. I would recommend a really stiff fork with this bike. I am getting some custom 3.5 inch riser bars made, and then i'll use a BMX stem to lengthen the toptube.

The bike works great in any enviroment. Right now I have mine setup like a hlaf DH half street/dj bike. But once I get my parkbike i'll set it up with bigger tires (2.7 probably) and some larger rotors etc. It's a great bike if you like jumping and doing tricks and stuff on natural terrain. But it can easily be run singlespeed with backbrake only and slicks, and it'll perform great. Stairs are no problem. It's the closest thing you'll come to a BMX bike/DH bike mixture. It's great. Go for it!

Yeah Shortbus, I remember when you were considering the Mini, and I was egging you on! Buy it Christian Buy it! And you ended up a happy man didn't you?

Hey, what are you guys using for hubs? It's 135mm width with a what for axle? 12mm or 10mm? I don't want qr. What do you suggest for rims and hubs? Also, I'm assuming the sprocket on the right side will accept a 9sp chain to run a deraulleur and cassette? I ordered mine up. BLACK baby, BLACK.

BMW's are cool. I have gotten to know Doc this summer and he is a really cool guy. Very moddest and super laid back. I rode with him and Chromegoddess at the first PKill. I had no idea he was BMW until Snowshoe. CG made a comment at some point about BMW and Doc, so I asked Doc if he worked for BMW. He was like "Uhh..."
I would love to take one for a spin.

So is it just Joe and Doc that operate that place? Called them to make sure they got my check and it took 3 days to hear from them. I get the feeling they are a very small outfit. I notice some of you have different sprockets and whatnot on the left and right side? Do they make their own sprockets, or use profiles? Are they interchangeable as far as gear ratios? What size would I use on the right (drive) side if I was to go with a 9 speed setup? Sorry I'm clueless and have lots of questions, but diddn't want to annoy Joe. Also, can you use an 8" rotor on the rear or are you restricted to a 6". Damn it, I hate waiting for sheit, but I think this thing will be well worth the wait. Should have all the money by october, then scrounge another 1500 for the parts. What do you guys think of a marzocchi 666 fork on that bike? Think that will chopper it out too much?

You're almost as bad as Instigator.. You just put together that beauty (!! ) of a Hollowpoint and now you're buying another 6" travel frame!

Planning on getting rid of that Hollowpoint or keeping it for a trail bike?

Well it hasn't been 3 weeks yet, so I can't sell the Hollowpoint. Just kidding, I waited months for that frame. I diddn't know how it would ride, but the thing is an absolutel blast. Even at 36lbs with my 200lb (with gear) body on it, it rails, climbs like a mule and is effortless to get the front end up on the thing. In my opinion, it handles better than the hollowpoint I had prior which was a medium as well, but too small. They changed the geometry this year for the medium (mines a 17" I think) and added an inch or so to the TTL which made a world of difference. This one is so much more comfortable. It's the best trail bike I've ever ridden. I can't imagine what it would be like if it was down to 30lbs somehow. Yeah, the BMW is just something to keep overactive brain in check for the next few months. Nice knowing you have something nice to look forward too. I know I'm not getting it overnight (for once in my life) and I'm at peace with that. So now I can carefully do my research and hand pick exactly what components I want on the rig. I doubt I'll be doing any trail riding on it (not sure what a 24" bike feels like) but I'm buying it mainly for urban riding and from what I've heard so far about the FQ, all is positive.

Kevin, On my TMX I have a 25 tooth Profile Imperial chainwheel and a 11-32 9spd cass and It is perfect for street riding. I think Shortbus has the same 25t on his mini.

To make gearing changes, You only swap the chainwheel that is connected to the crank arm , the other 2 chainwheels stay as-is.

So are you getting black crank arms and black chainwheels? you could even get your links and other aluminum hardware like the bottom brakcet, drop outs anodized black or another color to match your headset/hubs/seat collar ETC.

Sounds kick ars! enjoy

with a 25 tooth chainring and the stock pivot rings (left and right), the gearing comes to be about 34 tooth chainring (33.8 i think), so with a 25 tooth profile imperial ring it's like riding a normal bike with a 34 tooth chainring, which is pretty much smack down the middle for 8/9 speed setup. BMW makes a stock chainring that is 28 teeth i think, and that one rides like a 38 tooth chainring, better for DH'ing but a bit overgeared for street.

Black on black with those shiny machined bits is very nice on the mini!!!!

Thanks mang, All I want is this ring that shortbus has (chrome) with the chrome cranks, ,did you get that from BMW or profile? I know yours is black, I'm just stuck on the black frame with chrome bits, that's all. I can't believe I'm getting one of these. Now I'm gonna get sensory overload trying to pick out a fork for this bike. Thinking of waiting for the marz 66 to come out, but don't know if that will chopper out (rake?) the bike too much, whadaya think?
Hey, what's it like riding one of these with 24" wheels? I recently got a 20" BMX, but I'm having a hell of a time with it. At 6'0, I feel like a phucking ape on it. Hopefully that is not the case with the BMW. Thanks for the help guys, bulding a bike like this is a dream and the build up/ parts selection is crucial to me.

well, I run a 6" travel super T on my mini with a 26" front wheel, it is choppered up for sure but i like my ride like that. I'm sure with a 24" front wheel it wouldn't be as bad with a 6" travel fork. This frame feels very well balanced IMO with a 6" fork (6/6 setup).

All I can say is a 24" front wheel would just not cruise over obstacles as smoothly on trail riding (remember i ride my mini XC :) )
The imperial ring i have is a profile ring, however BMW got it for me directly from profile themselves and installed it, for the price of the ring itself. Next time u talk to them on the phone tell them you want the 25 tooth profile imperial ring (i think profile makes it in either black or polished Al which is the closest to chromed they get stock without you rechroming it). Also mention that you want the chromed profile cranks. In my case it was pretty much whichever color cranks they had at the time but if you're patient or feel lucky tell them you DEFINITELY want the chromed crank arms. At this point i'm thinking about getting the titanium spindle for the cranks but am not sure i'd wanna go through the hassle of reinstalling the cranks just to save some weight. They come stock with the steel spindle which weighs quite a bit.

shortbus, the spindle is super easy to change out. It's a good idea to maintain the spindle's bolts cause if you leave them in there for a long time they'll be very difficult to remove, especially if there was never any anti-seize applied to the threads of the crank bolts. The lock bolt that holds the chainwheel to the arm is also a major PIA if you dont have any anti-seize applied. Steel crank arm and steel bolts = trouble.

to change the spindle do you need to take out the eccentric BB cups? Any crank pulling tools required??? do you just un-tighten the 2 crank bolts against each other after loosening the chainring bolt? and the whole assembly comes apart? I might go for the Ti spindle after all like your TMX has.

the BB cups do not come out at all.

Once you take the crank arms off, you just slide off the chainwheels and their respective spacers (keeping them in the order that they came off). You then just push out the spindle. There is nothing holding the spindle in place once you remove everything. Slide in the new spindle in and replace the spacers and chainwheels back on in the order they came off, throw on crank arms and bolt them down. your good to go!

Just to set a few things straight´:

You don't want to run a large fork on the mini! No way.

You'll want to run dual 24" wheels and 5" fork, unless you are kinda weird like Shortbus ;)

The mini has a 28 tooth chainwheel on the left side, which you can change to a smaller chainwheel, making the gearing lighter.

The Mini is gret for street, but is very well off on trails and even some small DH. But is really a stunt bike, that pedals well, and has superb manuevering abilities. It's great for 4x as well, but it's harder to accelarate because of the very short TT.

Take my advice: Run dual 24"'s and 5" fork. Period.

My mini now. Just gave her a makeover:

Thanks for the info man, 5" fork it will be. I want to get a Shiver SC for it (I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT FLEXXING EITHER - I ALREADY HAVE ONE ON ANOTHER BIKE) but don't think you can get them anymore.
I tend to be very lazy when pedalling, so if a 28T sprocket means like 36T in the real world, then maybee I should go for a 25 or something. Well put it this way, on my other rigs, I run 32T up front. So I would like the gearing to be similar to that. Now I might be answering this question for myself, but why the eccentric BB? Is this to allow for tensioning of the LSD chain? Seems the only logical explanation for that setup? If so, how does the ECC BB work as far as tightening it? Do you basically have BB cups with an inner round piece that rotates on bearings with an off center hole for the axle? JHFC, I'm confusing myself? This f'n bike is complicated ha?

Yeah it's been used. Haha. Of course. I'm getting it repainted, and cleaned in the winter though. When i get it back, it'll hopefully feel like a brand new bike.

Yes the eccentric bb tightens the leftside chain. It a normal profile axle, and it has the off axis BB cups, and instead of normal (huge) profile bearings, these cups use small (and strong) needlebearings.

You could try and get your hands on a Doardo like mine. Definitly the bike worthy. Hands down, the best SC fork i've ever tried. And, if i may says so, less flex than the Shiver. Less plush as well.

The 28 is like a normal 38 tooth setup, so you might want a smaller chainwheel.
You can calculate the "normal" chainring size like this:

big leftside chainwheel / small leftside chainwheel x rightside chainwheel.

That would be like: Y / 17 x 23 = your desired gearing (perhaps 32)

Solve for Y

Y= the large leftside chainwheel needed for your desired gearing.

Did I forget anything?

Oh yeah!

There are 3 long needle like skrews to attach/tighten the BB cups together. Real simple. You tighten those skrews once you BB has been moved enogh so the chain is tight, the tighten the cranks like normal 3 pieces.

tu comprends?
