What i've been doing in my bikelessness

as many may know, my dumb azz blew up my fork trying to d a mod to it, and i'm too broke to do anything about it... well, not necessarily too broke, but too uniterested(summer heat is very, very unmotivating):busted:
so i've been spending all my money and time on and with my new camera, and so far, heres what i've come up with:

i guess it wouldnt be safe to say i was totally bikeless all summer, but i was Rotec-less, so it felt like it :P

but now i am truly bikeless because i broke the der. hanger on the hardtail bunny hopping off a curb...:bonk:

and if for some reason you want to see more of my photography
you can fnd it here

Critique is more than welcome

Yeah, no offense but as of now your time and money has been wasted. I can't say my photography is great but here's a few of my biking shots with what I think are some decent compositions.

interesting focal points are always good.....

your time and money have not been wasted and any asshat that would tell you that thinks too much of themselves.

Can you improve?
Yes.
Read some books, ask questions and keep shooting. Don't be afraid to try anything.

rule of thirds man, ever hear of it? read up on photography my suggestion
yeah, i've heard of it... i've kept it in mind since i was 10 years old and started studying photography...

i imagine you are talking about the last few pics, and heres my explanation:
i was shooting with a 40-150mm lens in the last three pictures, so my field of view didnt allow for much composition as i couldnt get very far away from my subjects... in the others where the rider is centered, those were shots taken while i was shooting a sequence, which is why i didnt move the camera to allow composition in every shot...
the other shots where the rider is in the outside thirds were shot the same way, BUT i selected them epsecially because my subject and focal point was not necessarily the rider, but rather the roost or the rest of the trail behind him... he is just an active addition to the picture

but i do make the mistake of mis-composing my subject, usually by centering it in an active situation, quite often; and i'm working on getting used to telling myself ''f-it, if the rider is cut off at the bottom or top of the frame, i will correct it the next time''...

if this post is cut off because of the size of the pictures, i'm going to go back and put the smaller size up... hopefully linked to a larger one
^^it wasnt

agreed, not a waste of time at all

the second from the bottom berm shot has potential to be a great shot but your friend being in shot takes away from the impact a little.

an explanation of why each compostion is better would be much more critique-like...
and no offense, but personally the only good thing i find about your shots is the lighting and color... imo, in every one of them, the rider is centered or the compostition is has possibility to be there, but is cut off too quick... the first picture has good composition directing your eyes because the rider is looking down at his line, but when you follow his line of sight, you come to the edge of the frame and are left wondering ''what could possibly be down there?''... which is okay in instances, and is very debatable in this one...
all in my opinion

and LMC, thanks, i was stoked when i saw the shot at first, and then i noticed him up there and was kinda bummed out... but i know what i want now! haha

Rule of 3rds is a basic BS start point! If you image sucks, or is boring it would help. Mess around with it. Use AV and vary speeds between like 1/60 on up to about 1000 and mess with it. You will get better at it the more you do it? Throw a frnot gradient on the first 2 and it will make the riders pop some more.

click on the underlined link saying "you can find it here"...

if you already got that down, its in my collection "People and Portraiture" in the set "First Attempts"
Silly me. I thought it was the other guy's photo. I thought perhaps there was a way to find the user account if you had a direct link to the flickr photo. thanks.

In all seriousness, there are some rad photos in your flickr. The mom photo is a great one! I think you kinda posted your worst riding shots here, but that's just my opinion. Mountain biking photography is kinda lame to me. How many times have we all seen the same bike porn shot over and over? Portraits get way more interesting. IMO, of course.

What kinda camera did ya get? Sold anything yet? Published anything? Got flashes and all that jazz?

Take more pictures of girls. Then show them to us.

interesting... what shots did you think were good? just curious...
and yeah, i totally see your point with the repetitiveness in MTB photography, i'm just taking shots to see what i'm capable of before i get serious in anything...

i bought an Olympus E-500 with a Zuiko 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 on Craigslist for $300 and last tuesday i bought a Zuiko 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 for $120 through Craigslist... very cheap equipment, but i am very happy with it as my starter kit! its my first digital equipment, and my first true SLR, IMO... i shot with a Yashica 230AF with a Kyocera 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 macro lens for about a year and a half before the aperture motor in the camera died...

i havent had anything published or sold... probably because i have no way to resize my pics in order to make someone want the full size... but at the same time, i havent really tried, as i dont feel i take good enough pictures to sell, and just havent gotten around to trying to get any work published...

i am working on buying an FL-36 flash to my setup, but still need the cash and the ability to make up my mind on how to spend it:biggrin:

i am also working on buying a Canon 20D body for my action shots, as it is an overall faster camera with worlds less noise on te sensor... the Olympus sensor is puny, so any ISO over 320 or 400 is almost unacceptable due to noise... and kit Canon lenses are three times as cheap and way more availible than the Zuiko lenses... but the Zuiko's are weatherproof and whatnot...

Didn't mean to sound like an a-hole. I really like the last shot you posted even though you didn't take it, the roost looks sick. Thanks for the light comment, I dropped the flash I was borrowing before I went down to the race so it was an interesting weekend.

didnt really take it that way...
hope i didnt sound like one either...

Pat...
they are also more expensive... not extremely, but still...
either way, i'm not too worried about the sealing, as i am going to get what my nearly nonexistent possesion of money can buy... all i want is three lenses to cover my ranges, all i need now is a 70-300...

i am going to get the GIMP once i get a computer of my own that i can start editing on... currently i'm using my own handmedown laptop, but is got a virus, so i'm not letting my camera touch it, nor am i uploading any pics through it... but my computer story has been the same since before i even got my camera, so thats why i havent done anything...
