The Santa Cruz County District Attorney"s Office says Daniel Judd, 66, booked into County Jail on Monday, was complicit in the fraudulent purchase of a Hubbard Gulch Road house whose rightful owners returned from vacation only to find their locks rekeyed, their furniture gone and Judd living there.
Investigators say Judd helped draft false documents to give the appearance that he bought the house from another man. The professed seller, Santa Cruz resident Ray Tate, was arrested last month and faces charges of obtaining property under false pretenses and recording false real estate records.
Judd, formerly of Saratoga, will be charged with three felony crimes involving the falsification of documents, the district attorney"s office says. An arraignment date has not be set. He has been released from jail.
Tom Decker, who bought the property two years ago with his wife Marie McArthur, said Tuesday he was relieved that Judd was behind bars.
The couple discovered Judd living in the home, just off Highway 9, in late April after being away for six weeks. They were barred from the property after Judd showed authorities a deed that he is now thought to have falsified.
