I've decided to go for a singlespeed for my dirt jump/freeride hardtail. Now, I need to decide what gear ratio would work best. I've heard that 2:1 is good; what do you use, and for what type of riding?

I run 2.4:1 (36/15 or 38/16) on a 24 for street and dirt....it's sweet.
I've been pushing a 38/20 in the woods which is just less than 2:1 and is stout even on a 24"....but the woods are steep here.

2.2:1 (36/16 or 38/17 both come close) would be a fair street/dirt gear for a 26".

2:1 is too short for me, spin out way too quickly... and that's offroad. It'd be hell on a commuter.
I'm running 36/16 (2.25:1) with 26" wheels and can push that around offroad, it's a touch tall for techy stuff, but good for trail cruising. For commuting I ran 39/17 (2.29:1) and I find that's an excellent gear for me. But it all depends on bike setup and pedalling style too. And do you want acceleration, or top end? How strong are you for standing starts? That'll be imporant for DJ'ing.

I have 26" wheels. I'm about average at standing starts. I don't dirt jump that much, but I freeride pretty often. My favorite freeride spots take a little acceleration, but top speed is more important--I just need to be able to survive some small climbs.
