Well I wanted to wait on this review for reasons I'll explain here.
MMcG lent me a set of Sycros wheels as part of the "Supercaliber Reclaimation Project". The Super Cal has a notoriously flexy rear end and when I got it last year for Christmas (My wife rules!) it pretty much hung in the garage unridden as I played around with steel hardtails. It was basically unrideable in my book.
Well about a month ago I decided to take my SuperCal back and "fix" the problem with a stiffer rear wheel. It comes stock with the Bonty Race wheelset.
The Syncros wheel set is billed as more of a trail use rim which I'm not all that used to. I come from a racing back ground and that's what I still lean towards today.
These rims are a pretty wide rim (compared to my usual standards) at 28mm.
I didn't do too much reaserch on the hubs but I can say they engaged perfectly the whole time and gave off that "Hey I'm coming!" freewheel sound that you either love or hate. Plus they are white..I loved that about them.
Now the reason I waited on the review was because I wanted to do a back to back comparison with them and the Race wheels as part of my project.
I gotta say the Syncros wheels were pretty awsome in my application of stiffening up the lateral flex of the rear end. The 32 spokes and wide rim kept the rear end pretty much right on track. Compared to going back to the Race wheel's (which I did up the tension considerably and used a bolt on skewer) 28 holes and narrow rims, it was night and day. Yesterday's ride on the Races were better than usually, but I till yearned for the other wheels.
Another forgotten benefit was that the wider rim changes the tire dramatically.
It gives a wider stance to the casing and the ability to run lower presssures. Huge improvement.
All in all I gotta say that these are a great wheel to consider if you're looking for a trail wheel or a raceable wheel and you're on the larger side (6'5" 200ish here).
