am i the only one that finds it pretty funny that "back" is mentioned fifty times in this thread.
Speaking of trashed backs, i've blown my back up twice where i was incapable of movement for weeks.
i make money in a physical job where i need a back.
What works for me is to listen to the body. Get rid of furniture that tweaks your back. Strengthen muscles that support your back. i do various stretches and various stomach exercises every morning. Fork over cash to get a back support mattress for your bed, you spend at least a third of your day there. Lift proper and don't lift twist. Listen to your body, if you feel it tweak out do what you need to do to get better, be that a hot shower, or rest.
Good luck with your ventures, health is so important to well being, and mountain biking as you know is a great venue for these pursuits.
