post injury trainer, bad weather no-trails bike.

I have been throwing around idea of buying a sub-2k dollar bike meant for easy pedalling recovery days, road/pavement/hardpack smooth dirt capable hardtail. Having just broken my collar bone, a rehab non-stationary trainer. A bike for pavement spinning after a rainy day where the trails r too wet (closed). Occasional commuter and cabin-fever CX racing.

Would u choose a cx bike or 29r (or 27.5) hardtail?
Thinking between a specialized crux or stumpy ht...

A hardtail 29er with slicks makes a competent road bike.
A hardtail 29er with narrow knobbies makes a competent CX bike
A hardtail 29er with MTB tires is a mountainbike.
