when he did enact an entire week of recognition just speaks poorly on your part. We know you aren't a fan of Obama, and it just seems like you're digging for another trivial reason to bag on him by focusing on what he hasn't done instead of what he HAS done.

that is done every year, kind of like making the groundhog declaration in february. it's just a function of the position. he didn't come up with it, he just continued the tradition but did not follow up on the actual memorial part as every other president in the past has.

and as far as digging for another trivial reason to bag on him...i don't suppose anyone in here ever gave that consideration to our previous POTUS?
double standard?

there are some things that the prez has to miss because of his schedule, i understand that. i just find it in poor taste that he couldn't postpone the phillie meeting a few hours. overpaid medicinally enhanced jocks > dead cops is the message that was sent, intentionally or not.

and ohio....he's spent a lot of time in chicago and has some pretty anti-police partners; it's a stretch but i wouldn't put it past him.

I don't disagree with your complaint. It does seem callous that the President would not even send a representative while he meets with the Phillies.

Like I said, I bet Bush/Clinton had about the same track record though.

I am not saying they should or should not have attended the ceremony, just that Obama could be unfairly criticized.
You think?

I've found record of Bush Sr at ONE of these (in '92, 4 years after inauguration)*, Clinton at ONE of these (in '97), and Shrub at FIVE of them (anecdotally, I only see online record of '03, '05, '06, and '07. Note he didn't attend for his first 2 years of presidency). Great for the cops, but honestly Shrub had the most unimaginably screwed up priorities for how he spent his time. All he did was shake hands and ranch, of course he made it to 5 of them (but not 8).

*Incidentally Bush Sr was also the first President to EVER attend this event. Are you saying Reagan insulted the cops too? How about Nixon and Ford and Carter?

Here is Obama's proclamation as he enacted/renewed the memorial week and day:

public enemy #1 said:
Every day, peace officers put on their uniforms and go to work to safeguard America's communities and uphold the freedoms we hold dear. This week we honor their contributions and sacrifice.

Law enforcement officers routinely place themselves in harm's way to protect people they do not and will not know. They serve willingly and devotedly, and their commitment is essential for us to maintain a healthy quality of life, a strong economy, the safety of our families, and a robust national security system.

My Administration is working to keep Americans safe and to strengthen the Federal partnership with America's peace officers. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which I recently signed, makes $4 billion available for State and local law enforcement. This provision will save or create thousands of law enforcement jobs across the country through the revitalized Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Recovery Program. The Recovery Act also provides $2 billion through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. These measures will put more officers on the street and help those already serving to perform their jobs more effectively.

The benefits that peace officers provide come with great sacrifice. Every year, many give their lives in the performance of their duties. Their contributions live on in the communities they strengthened, and their service will never be forgotten. This week, as we recognize their commitment to duty, we renew our pledge to support their families and colleagues.

The President has been requested to designate May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of all Federal, State, and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty, and to designate that week as Police Week in recognition of their service given to the United States (36 U.S.C. 136-37).

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2009, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 10 through May 16, 2009, as Police Week. I call upon all Americans to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also call on Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, officials of the other territories subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, and appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day. I further encourage all Americans to display the flag at half staff from their homes and businesses on that day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eleventh day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

BARACK OBAMA
In short, I invite all you self-righteous cry-babies looking for something to be angry about, because you just plain don't like the guy, to suck it. Suck it hard.

Nobody ever had dig to find something to rag on W about. As I recall that dipsh!t spent 8 years freely and quite openly providing very obvious things for the entire world to bag on him about. :twitch:

no living cop is demanding anything.
Really?

What's this thread about then?

It's about being marginalized over another meeting and you feel your profession deserves better.

You sure are one self righteous bastard who's good at saying whatever makes you look good. No one has ever said police work is unnecessary and very few have a problem with the profession. What you confuse for 'getting crapped on' is when people speak up over cops acting like asses. At least in reference to this forum. That's neither here nor there though because this is a different subject. Don't confuse the two. Yeah it sucks he didn't attend. It would be a nice gesture. He did also make one of those though. It has no bearing on his personal feeling about civic servants however. He knows who blocks the bullets.

And as usual, ohio does his homework for you......

Thank you for choosing your line of work. Now quit acting like such a little primadonna.

Hey now, I remember Manimal coming on here, year after year and totally berating GWB for missing this event. He said "I have to admit, I'm just as critical of our Republican president than I would be of a Democrat that misses it. Otherwise, it would totally look like fake outrage for us right-wingers to pretend to be upset about..."

Can't find the posts, but I definitely remember them. Manimal, can you post links?

My big question is why do you want that cocksucking Muslim not even born in the United States atheist socialist queer communist affirmative action loving white hating cop hating military hating baby raping faggot at the event anyways?

What's the problem? Just can't quit him?

What have we learned here at ridemonkey in the last few days? LBS workers and cops are unbelievable whiners. Both looking for reverence beyond what they deserve.
Cops should run bike shops, and bike messenger squatters with $300 shoes should be in charge of law enforcement.

i see that my point has been accepted and understood about as well as a basket of DVD's to the prime minister

:banghead: :banghead:
Oh yes, we get it. Another right wing contrived nontroversy by a desperate, out of touch political ideology, thinly veiled as a pathetic woe-is-me political attack. Congrats, you volunteered for a dangerous line of work, I respect that, it doesn't mean that the nation needs to get on its collective knees and kiss your collective asses.

Too much? :ban:

Yeah because it's so lofty and complex.

Your point is that you don't like the guy. Your justification is the veil of indignation over this being the only time this kind of thing has happened.....which isn't even the case. So since this isn't in fact the only time this has happened, and your disdain was based on a false premise, you can be happy now. So be happy.

All you had to do was state your disappointment over his absence instead of all the other bullshlt and no one would be jumping on your case. You may not realize that but it's the truth. Instead of playing the victim just state the seeming contradiction in significance of the photo op. I for one would probably be on your side. But since it took this long for you to get around to be outraged, I'm guessing you yourself weren't keeping too close of tabs on the event.

But in this thread I've learned that W. didn't attend the first event following 9/11 where the contributions of the NYPD were surely on everyone's minds. I'm just as pissed as you are about that one. You're right. That guy was a dick.

Hey,

Obama not attending Peace Officers Memorial Day is a non-controversy.

Honoring cops killed in the line of duty is not a political stance either.
