So I'm thinking about getting into this, it seems to have some of the fun and atmosphere of collegiate slalom that I miss a lot. Thing is, I know nothing about the bikes, or training for this type of race.
I've gotten a bit out of shape, although i'm pretty active, I was just overeating a lot. I only get to ride my mountain bike twice a week, and have a short commute by bike everyday (I often make this longer). I'd like to give myself something to train for, I usually do a bit better when I do. I'm 6'4" 240 at the moment, working to get back down to 220.
I originally wanted a CX bike as a way of having a bike I could go out, ride 60 miles and find some doubletrack on the way, the racing idea is new. Living in Boston, its hard to get to trails in, especially before/after work with traffic and all, I figure a CX bike could make this one fun. I find my skills could work well with CX, and i'm used to riding my commuter in a way that would be similar to how I would want to ride a CX bike.
What are peoples thoughts on the $1500 and under range? Should I go discs, I kind of like the idea, so I have to worry less about bending wheels. There seems to be a lot of different geometry out there, what should I look for? I am used to riding slack a slack low 29" mtb, and also hop on a road bike from time to time.
Also, I am looking towards next season, what race series should I look towards?
