Hi guy.im new 2 the sport.started doing some downhill but looking to get into the dirtjump seen now. im want to know what will be my best option to buy, a bmx or a dirtjump bike. im 1.8m tall and weigh 190lbs.
well i did road and track riding 4 a long time and then went to cross country and then to downhill.Well started DH end of last year.now want 2 try dirt jump. just think im a little big 4 a bmx but the bmx looks more comfortable over the jumps
Thats the thing elliotmotocross... most of the people there use a bmx. i cant wait to go and try it out but have to get a bike 1st, and dont want to make the wrong decision. will wait and see what the other monkey say.

. . . and how old are you? my advice for older beginners is start with big wheels first (24" bmx or 26" mtbmx). for younger beginners i would say start with 20" then go up from there as you add bikes to the collection!
oh yeah, and that spot looks really fun. someone obviously put a lot of work into those jumps. remember the newb trails etiquette when you first show up there. (see "the Digging Rules"). they will be a lot cooler to you as a newb if you are cool to them.
with your DH "big bike" background i think a dirt jumper 26 will feel the most natural to you. 24" bmx's are cheaper because of not having an expensive suspension fork.
i have ridden all kinds of bikes (20" 22" 24" 26" and 29") and without a doubt i like jumping my blackmarket 26" the best.
A bmx will force you to develop skills a lot faster, and teach you to be a better (more precise) rider.
A 26" bike will be easier, and less sketchy at first.
If I were you, I'd give it a good try on a 20"... see if you can borrow one for a little while to see if you can manage it.
Thanks so much guys. I went to the local mtb shop yesterday and i think i made up my mind on a dj bike 26'' . I felt very comfortable on one. Now just to find 1 hehe. Thanks 4 all the advice . WILL MAYBE TRY A 24'' AS WELL.
p.s sorry 4 the bad spelling english isint my 1st language.
Nice to see a fellow South African on Ridemonkey. You made a good choice on getting a 26" DJ bike, They're alot more forgiving and dont punish you for your mistakes half as much as 20" do. They can also be used for a bit of xc if you want to do some trainging for DH. I have a Giant STP converted to single speed and I use it for all my training for DH. Xc, bmx, 4x racing and dirt jumping are great with my STP.
Assuming you havent found a bike, I'd look at the Mongoose Ritual hi, Kona Shonky or Giant STP as they are all easy to get in SA. Look for a bike with a good frame and fork firstly and everything else is secondary. Light, strong wheels and decent cranks will be an added bonus. I've got mine dialed now and I havent ridden a jump bike I'd prefer. Remember, you know know what to look for, a good second hand bike is ALWAYS better than new if you are short of cash. I picked up my 2008 STP with brand new 2009 Dirt Jumper 2's and an XT, mavic 321 wheel set for R2500. That quality bike would go for upwards of R8000 new.
for those jumps???? I would definately not waste the money those mountain bike thangs are expensive, theres a reason every single person in that video was on a 20' rigid.
like bringing a downhill bike to the skatepark. sure you could get it done... but why?
.........bah he's already decided on 26" so be it. Besides BMXes are cheap enough, even if he decided to sell his mtb at a later stage he could probably buy a top notch bmx and maybe have some change over.
