It's hard to remove the white from the edges without screwing the pic up. In your case, I would look for another image that didn't have a white bg. Make sure your selection tool isn't set to "feather #" when you cut it out. Otherwise, you gotta just carefully erase the white with a soft brush. The magnetic lasso does a good job too pulling stuff out of pics.
