Not really any different than Google Street/Birds Eye view. Pretty sure its been determined that such a thing is legal, even if it is creepy.

in regards to the private property aspect, i checked out the source article (from a drone hobbyist site), guy's flight was perfectly legal : http://www.suasnews.com/2012/01/113...stigated-after-drone-images-reveal-pollution/

If if the meat packing plant tried to pull the trespassing/invasion of property card, the fact that they're creating a public health risk (possibly releasing BBP's into the watershed) would almost certainly supersede any privacy issue.

Totally legal to be seeing stuff from public airspace, just like seeing stuff from the street. And the drone pilot's not bound by the 4th Amendment anyhow.

Commercial UAV photography is getting shutdown by the FAA. Hobbyist uses like this one probably aren't far behind.

I can understand some danger in having things falling from the sky, particularly in populated areas, as well as potentially air traffic issues. A full fledged pilots license seems like taking things a bit too far however.

Yeah, makes no sense at all. Hobbyists have been flying model rockets and RC aircraft for how many decades now? Adding a camera does not change things and in fact live video feeds to HUDs actually makes it easier/safer on the high-end ones.

What the FAA ruled which is a joke imho is if a hobbyist flies a RC plane/helicopter/quadracopter they don't need a license to do so with a camera or not, but if that person is making money it is commercial and you need a certain license that doesn't cover uav's or other hobby type aircraft like in this story:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/us/faa-grounds-plane-leading-whooping-cranes-to-florida.html
They did decide that the people in the NYT piece could go ahead with the flight, but that was because of possible political problems. It is a good explanation on why you can't use uav's for commercial use

FAA is making it easier to use small UAVs for law enforcement but harder for commercial use. The people that do it for a living are more of a risk than hobbyists or law enforcement or are they worried about protecting other commercial interest which might fall out of favor via cheaper sUAS?

Not that I disagree with any of the opinions in this thread about the FAA, but the drones used by universities probably aren't "spy planes" as that article insinuates. Chances are they are legitimate research tools. My brother's remote sensing program at U of Mich was using drones to develop storm/hurricane mapping technology, for example. They were using a Global Hawk owned by NASA.

Georgia Tech probably isn't taking pics of you doing naked yoga in the backyard.

NLR PD's "drone" (RC helo with a camera) is on that map. They purchased it a couple of years ago, but only recently gained cert. to fly it operationally. I believe in the mean time, the company that sold it to them went tits up and now they are having some MX issues with them. I've been daydreaming of some novel countermeasures to that drone..........should it ever get fixed.......

You went to engineering school. You know the ratios. As a GT alumus thingy, I can categorically say that of all the sites on that list, fear that one the most. Especially if you have boobies.
