i've got pretty much the exact setup you're looking at...
36 Talas, DHX Air shock.... makes for a sturdy, do-anything rig.
with the 1.5 headtube and G3 dropouts plus the 2-position shock mounting, you can micro-adjust the bike to suit your preferences.

not that the 40+ class needs any special bikes to pretty much mop the floor with most riders down to the Jr. Ex class, but a properly engineered 29er for DH with appropriate components would have its merits.

i told him I tried to consider the frame and not the components, cuz most, if not all of my negatives were based on the components' relation to the frame.
