Saw my first ebike on the trails yesterday. Guy was about my age (mid 40s) and looked reasonably fit. Made me ragey. Is this legal? Trail signs say no motorized vehicles.
Can't go any bigger than 36T rear cog on 9 speed. I've tried it. Doesn't work. I would suggest 1x10 as the cheapest alternative. Other option is to find an old used 5x94mm crankset. You can then go down to 29 on the front.
I too am a believer in cheap lights. Been running these for 2 years with no issues.

You need either a medium cage or a long cage rear derailleur. I have a 42T rear on my 1x10 and it works fine. By the way, I switched to 1x10 because I couldn't get it to work on 1x9.
I had this happen to me last year. Had 12 transactions over 2 days. Cleaned out my bank account and I got overdraft charges to boot. Took about 3 weeks to get it all straightened out. :(
