Big Caliper Little Rotor vs Opposite

In the tests of the new Sram Maven brake, several reviewers have mentioned downsizing rotors to manage the very powerful brake's tendency to lock up wheels unintentionally. I can see going from 220 with Codes down to 203 with Mavens because the 220s are so large that it's easy to bump them and...

Why Aren't There Better Shock Pumps?

Our shop throws away at least 3 pumps a year* because the chucks go bad. Either the threads strip or the seal and pointy thing become out of tolerance so they lose air during disconnection. I personally kill one every 2 years**. Most of the hoses are interchangable so the cheapest solution is...

    What's The Deal w/55mm Cranks?

When bikes had 135 or 142mm hubs we had cranks with whatever normal Q factor was and direct mount rings in whatever normal chainline was. When hubs grew to 148mm cranks stayed the same shape, BB axles stayed the same length, and chainrings got slightly different offset to sit 2-3mm farthe...

    EXT Inverted Fork

https://extusa.bike/collections/forks/products/ext-ferro-e-mx-fork EXT just released this inverted 205mm steel 36mm stantioned fork for Sur-rons, Talarias, Kubergs, Drills, and other e-dirtbikes that use MTB headsets and suspension. I wonder if anyone will try it on a DH bike or long travel...

    Chain Effect On Suspension

This article mentions the O-Chain device becoming popular on the WC DH circuit and describes a couple patents Fox is persuing to eliminate the effect of chain growth on suspension. https://bikerumor.com/patent-patrol-fox-factorys-suspension-enhancing-hub-and-derailleur-assembly/ It seems that at...

    What's the Best Mineral Oil?

Do you guys have any preference in brake mineral oil? Is there something that works best in all non-DOT brakes due to its viscosity or resistance to thermal break down? I heard once that Shimano oil is too thick, contributing to pump up, so some guys were using Reverb oil in their Shimano brakes.

A Lower Sram Style Mount, 3D Print?

I'm looking for a Sram style shifter/dropper lever mount that extends lower to get the lever lower and farther back. I'm currently using one from a Fox Transfer since it is 2+mm lower than Sram, but I want lower. Have any of you seen one? Anyone want to make one on their 3d printer? Is there a...

    Spare Parts Law

Someone with more legal and historical knowledge please fill me in: When automobiles became a real industry didn't the USA make a law stating that some percentage of production be dedicated to spare parts? I think another part of the law was that spares must be available for some amount of time...

    Perfect DH Pants? (for me)

I could use some help finding better DH pants. I have what I think of as a typical cyclist's build (thin, tall, room in legs for thicker thighs and/or thin pads), but The Industry must disagree because I haven't found the right fit yet. So far everything is either too tight to fit comfortably on...

    Best DH Bike Travel Bag/Box?

I want a bag or box for flying with my DH bike. It must be very protective and not too much of a hassle to pack. It's gotta fit a size large (465ish reach) with dual crown fork, 29" wheels, and DH axle sizes. Bonus points if it can be used with my enduro bike that uses trail axle sizes. This...

    DH Fork Offsets

The 40 on my new DH bike probably comes with 52mm offset but 44 and 48 crowns are available. With a 27.5" wheel I'm sure I'll prefer 44. With a 29" wheel does anyone think I'll prefer the 48 or 52? On my 29" enduro bike I like 44 better than 51.

    DHX2 2021 vs Older

In all the release hype I didn't see anything about reduced adjustment range but my 2018 had 20 clicks on each adjuster while my 2021 only has 20 on LSC. The others are 6-8. On my odd-ball application* I have both rebounds maxed and I think I want it slower. Did the 2021 lose adjustment range or...

    What is This Inverted "Boxxer"

It looks like someone built an inverted fork in their garage with over 200mm travel using Boxxer stantions. Has anyone seen this before and knows anything about it?

    Fixing Shimano Wandering Bite Point

One of my rarely used bikes has a 2 year old set of SLX brakes that are nearly new and always felt perfect (I did the install and bleed). On the last two rides the rear started doing wandering bite point. The end of the stroke is still firm, whether it's engaging at the normal spot or close to...

2020 Scott Gambler (fork & wheel size)

I've been wanting a new DH bike next year and was specifically interested in a bike that is made for 27.5 or 29" wheels so I can build it with 27s but have the option of 29s later. Kona, GT, and Scott were on my short list but I went with Scott for the weight savings. I've only seen these bikes...

    Stiffest Flat Pedal Shoe?

Which one has the stiffest sole? I currently have the original low top 5.10 Impacts and they're okay but stiffer would be better for long rides. This is for my lightweight dirtbike that I put a photo of in the ebikes thread. Boots are overkill but with any shoe flex you can feel the pegs.

    Widest 26" DH Tire?

What's the widest 26" tire with a true DH casing that's still reasonably available? The Maxxis DHF 2.7s I have in the attic aren't that big. It's for an electric supermini dirtbike.

    Interbike, Gathering of the Lizards

So we're about to see how the switch from Vegas & Bootleg to Reno & Northstar goes. Any of you here? The outdoor demo at Northstar looks promising (free lift tickets?) and I'm hoping to play with the odd suspension designs at Jamis and Marin. A quick sprint on the 130mm Jamis showed it to be a...

    Newish 36 Tuning

I just got a 2018 36 (160mm for 29"). My last 36 was a 2011 180. While both use the RC2 damper the tuning seems to have changed. I'm using much less LSC & HSC than on my old fork. So, I'm curious how many clicks you guys with late model 36s are running for comparison.

    What's with Saint?

Has Shimano ever kept a group unchanged for so long? And it's their premier gravity group, supposedly on par with XTR and Dura-ace. Isn't it a little weird that Saint is still 10 speed while 11speed has been around so long it's trickled way down the trail bike groups? I really thought Shimano...
