I went. Had no idea about reservations or any of that business. We just showed up and parked the truck and camped. We gave the game warden beer and hotdogs.

Nope. We'd heard of the limit of vehicles allowed through the gate, and figured we'd better get there early. We got there insanely early, and were far from being first in line.

There was no option of making reservations at the time. Not that we were aware of, in any case...

As for bringing young kids along... I dunno. That would be some bloody hard work. The knife edge is pretty exposed, and some spots really require some scrambling elsewhere on the hike. I'd probably advise against it, but maybe your younguns are hardcore.
