hop growers - what's your trellis setup?

i know there are plenty of versions out there. just curious if anyone here has a setup. trying to determine how exactly i'm going to build a setup. i'm considering putting it near the corner of my deck (good sunlight, could have an attachment point off the structure of the deck for added stability). i have 4 hop plants (3 have currently started putting out shoots), so i need to get them in the ground in the next 10 days or so.

i tied some string to my deck.. but my hops never got taller then about 3 feet. must not have amended my soil well enough.

the homebrew shop i frequent has theirs growing in some half barrels with twine tied to the roof that they grow up.

They like sunshine. Growers around here use 12 or 14 ft tall trellis. You could set a pole and run string up it on 4 sides, one for each plant. You can use 2-3 strings per plant too if your feeling adventurous.

sunshine, check. they're on my deck at the moment. they've been in pots for ~2 weeks now and the tallest is already over a foot. they like a lot of water too apparently.

for my trellis i'm gonna get four 2x6x16 studs, and bury the ends in about 2-3 feet, so that should give me good height to work with (the first few seasons at least). i'm debating on getting pressure treated, since these are gonna be buried and not in contact with the bines themselves (going to use sisal twine).

i'm also considering buring some 4' sections of 4x4 or 4x6, then lagging the 16' studs to those to give a more stable base and a few extra feet of height. i'm leaning towards this since where they are going to be planted is going to have direct sunlight from early morning (~8am) until late evening (~8pm).

Sounds like a good plan. Once the roots are established you'll get better vine/cone growth. It takes a season though. 14-16ft is plenty of height, you'll be kicking ass if your vines hit the wire.

    Cheers

I run 2 wires per plant in a V shape from the pot up to the barge boards on the house (2 floors up).

In Cambridge I just ran twine from the roof of our three story apartment building. Of course, my hops were grafted to cannabis rootstock...

yea, i figure this should keep me covered for the first 2-3 seasons. give me some time to assess my trellis construction, and improve the overall design for when I need it to hit 20' or more.
