How to measure brake "size" ?

Im trying to order some avids for my cannondale 29er but all the sites list a size option (120mm etc), im not sure what measurement that is for, can anyone help me out there? Is it cable length or something?

The only variable in disc brakes is rotor size (diameter). The standard rotor size for most XC bikes is 160mm.

hasn't this been standardized? We're probably not talking about a bike with chainstay Hayes.

the bike is a 07 cannondale 29er caffeine, i wasnt sure what the measurement was, disc size was my first guess, but i figured i should ask people who know, rather than just buying and hoping for the best. My worry was that rear bracket and making sure that lined up
