I think he just means that bontrager wanted a tire with that race in mind.

Everyone knows minnaar is going to be sprinting till his eyes bleed and his spleen explodes to win that race.

You know how in moto, there are essentially two tire designs? "dirt" and "sand"?

I'm one of the people that thinks that applies to mountain bike tires too (except maybe 'hardpack' 'pretty much everything' and 'mud')

Everything else is just clueless designers screwing up in all kinds of silly directions.

If you ride Pisgah everyday, you wish your tire could change it's tread on demand. Mud, no loam...wait rooty...ah, too slimy, 45 duromter..crap rocks are eating it alive, need 60 durometer small block..crap, almost ate it in that crazy goo leaking out of the bank....semi-slick on this monotonous gritty clay..wait, need a cut spike.

    Dang...what do I do.......
Make it IDIOT PROOF....and someone will make a better idiot!

Well regardless of what you do, it sure isn't 'change tires every 200 feet'

    So my point still stands.

Pisgah must be really unusual. I mean everywhere else in the world there's complete uniformity on trails.
