Hey guys. I need some help. 05' kona coiler dee lux or '05 kona stinky dee lux? My riding style is ladders, 3 -7 foot drops to trannies, regular downhill single track, moderate rocky tech, and BSX type stuff. Basically i am an all around freerider. My enduro is not cutting it anymore. I need a bike that can handle this riding and will rarely bottum out on me. I want a bike that I can pedal around my house and also handle some drops at snowshoe (west virginia). Is the pedal bob really bad on the stinky? The coiler is a more pedal friendly bike but it does not have as much travel front and rear. Ive reaserched a lot of bikes and these bikes seem to fit my price range and overall needs when mountain biking (Ive looked at a lot of bikes, santa cruz, specialized, yeti, cortina, ect....) Both kona's cost the same amount $2700 brand new, so i am in quite a dilemma. Is the stinky dee lux so heavy its hard to wheely or hop a little? does the coiler dee lux bottum out a lot ( I weight 160) Which bike pulls up on drops better? If anyone has riden the bikes..... any info about the riding of the bikes would be helpful. (no one has an 05' yet probally, so if anyone has riden and '04 '03) but overall I just need to know which one? such a tough decision. I need some feedback!!!!

All comments are appreciated

Thanks again,
Bobby

05 coiler has 6 and 6
05 stinky is 7 and 7 I think.

coiler better to pedal around on and lighter, but still pretty burly
stinky better for higher speed and steeper terrain and big drops

coiler sounds perfect IMO, lots stronger than the enduro
our local kona dealer has an 05 coiler.

Isn't the 05 coiler just an 04 stinky? Based on that, I'd probably get the Coiler for more all-round use. Singlecrown forks = winner. Plus the coiler gets a few nicer parts, Raceface components instead of Truvativ, MAG brakes instead of 9's (huge factor IMO), and they both have the same damping going on otherwise.
They would both pedal with pretty similar characteristics at a guess, being the same suspension design and all that. But the DHX shock should help a bit, with its propedal system.

Hey thanks for the advice. But where is Bellingham? I live in virginia in fairfax county. Is bellingham a city in virginia or maryland? And how much do they run at that bike shop?

northwest washington state, 10miles fom the kona factory retail for price. 2.5hrs from whistler, .5hrs from canada, 1.5hrs north of seattle.

I ment more like; your kona dealer should have one very soon if not now.

If you want a longer travel bike that pedals well and doesn't cost a lot, how about this one? (http://www.supergo.com/profile.cfm?LPROD_ID=24856&lmfg_id=259&searchtext=&referpage=#)

yeah iron horses are tight. Im liking the rims.......I wonder why its cheaper than the coiler dee-lux i know the rims have to be a big factor over the single tracks ( the dee max are like $800 for a set!!!!Aye dios mio). It has a manitou fork on it....i heard those are a lot harder to maintain than marzocchis. have you riden this bike....it looks sweet but I dunno about the rear sock setup I like the kona setup better than the FSR setup. But the 5th element shock looks very nice. Its now an even harder decision. haha

Wow - if you can snag one of those IH SGSs in your budget I'd jump all over it!

An 05 coiler is an 03 stinky 6-inch, and it rides pretty well (judging by the 6" stinkys I've ridden). But, the stinky d is a burlier bike with stronger parts on it compared to the coiler. I've never had any problems with my 03 stinky d on any of the terrain you said that you ride, so the stinky would do you well.

If you need 3 rings, lighter fork / parts, while compromising some downhill perfromance for uphill pedal ability
= Get the coiler.

If you want a stronger frame, a little more travel, stronger parts and better stunt / downhill perfromance
= Get the stinky.

Hope that can help, I know some people bash on kona but I still rank them pretty highly for complete bikes.

I have an 04 colier deluxe and the 05 should be very good the one problem with mine is the small trravel on the 04 but the 05 is 6 inchen of travel. my coiler D can handle anything from12 foot drops to huge bolders and rockgardn's on my loca ltrail in santa barbara Tunnel to name one
