CBS News Apologizes Over Bush Guard Story
By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - CBS News apologized Monday for a "mistake in judgment" in its story questioning President Bush's National Guard service, claiming it was misled by the source of documents that several experts have dismissed as fakes.

The network said it would appoint an independent panel to look at its reporting about the memos. The story has mushroomed into a major media scandal, threatening the reputations of CBS News and chief anchor Dan Rather.

It also has become an issue in the presidential campaign. The White House said the affair raises questions about the connections between CBS's source, retired Texas National Guard officer Bill Burkett, and Democrat John Kerry's campaign. A Kerry adviser also said he had called Burkett at the request of a CBS producer.

Rather joined CBS News President Andrew Heyward in issuing an apology Monday.

Where is the GOP apology for funding the swifties for lies - they were proven to be lying? Why wasn't N8 up in arms over that deception?

What about the fact the guardman's secretary said the premise of the memo was true?

syadasti, you see no difference in lies (which has NOT been proven) and forging documents???? OK buh-bye

Actually these documents have not been proven to be forgeries yet.

Both parties were guilty of deception, nothing new for either party...

It's a plot by the GOP... they gave the false documents in order to discredit CBS and distract the American people from the real issue.

Now where is that tinfoil...

as we always should have known, it's not about what's said, but what's verifiable. Burkett's a fine example of saying whatever you want, just gotta grab the nutz on the flop.

where's sheryl crow talking about "karmaic retribution" now?

Who cares, really, whether Kerry had anything to do with this - if he did, Bush owes him a sincere "thanks". Dan Rather, on the other hand, looks like a f***ing idiot - his credibility is trash, all over something that could've been easily avoided had he had the inclination or discretion (politically speaking). Great move there Dan, given your career choice...

I think they said the last time CBS screwed up this big was 12 years ago, I forget which news story though. People won't remember it for too long. Most people don't/shouldn't trust any one media outlet alone except for maybe N8 ;)

It does seem weird that the White House did not deny the contents of the memos though.

Yeah - I'm sure you're right. As a society, we seem incapable of remembering most things beyond a couple of weeks.

let's see if i understand: this has come up again & again & hasn't stuck before when bush ran for governor of texas, sought to be the republican nominee for president, then finally for the highest elected office in our land - you should really stop by some time - and he still won't deny it?

weird indeed.

i could apply this same thinking to about 5 dozen items on the kerry list, but it would be silly, but not as silly as the kerry camp having to answer to every ancient charge.

Say....that hasn't worked out to well for him, now has it?

I'm not sure I fully understand your post but the White House response (note no Dubya response) smacks of diversion tactics and avoidance of the issue of Bush's service. It is also interesting that his assertion of the planes he was flying being out of service (hence why he stopped flying) does appear to have been completely and reliably debunked yet nothing much has been said about that.
