I don't know how I feel. My mom used to hit me and it did little to curb my childhood behavior. Punishment never crossed my mind when I was getting into trouble.

Niiiiiice. I have done so, myself, but only because it was requested. It still does nothing for me(the giving or the receiving). Maybe it's because my parents whipped my ass regularly coming up with belts, branches, wooden paddleball paddles, ping pong paddles(one of which broke in half during a beating), wooden spoons, metal rulers, etc. I just can't associate spanking with anything pleasurable.

I'm with you, though. I could never raise my hand to my girls. My voice, however, is a different issue. My wife and I run a tight ship, but you don't need to hit someone to discipline them. Just ask any drill sargeant in today's modern military. I agree that the average parent is far too permissive these days, but that does not mean the easy solution to misbehavior is the correct one.

I give my two little blokes a slap from time to time but I generally try to avoid it. There are better ways but a smack is so immediate it's hard to avoid it at times.

You had it easy... my mom would b*tch slap ya. backhand to the face before you knew it was coming. Didn't stop me either... just made me better at getting away with it.

Then when I was 16 I was able to blocked her hand... got the "wait 'till your father gets home" speach. My father laughed when he heard about it, since I was close to 6' tall and playing both hockey and lacross, and my mother is like 5'4".

I was occasionally spanked and smacked a few times as a child for punishment and I'm pretty well adjusted. I just think there are other, better options. I'm not sure what hitting teaches kids about violence and conflict resolution.

i have no kids so can't really say. But i got the belt and slapped, but never beat on, didn't happen that often only during times like when i threw rocks and fruit out in traffic, or the time i decided to try to burn the house down being a stupid kid. haha or then there was that time i whipped my little cousin silly with a plastic hot wheel track, man i got slapped around for that one haha.

I was spank like once when I was little...it worked on me. :) My brother on the other hand was pretty dense........lol Never did work for him.

I was picked up by my hair off a couch once, but I called my dad an asshole, so it was warranted. :) I was like 6 or something. Didn't to it again.

Never got beaten really, didn't do much to warrant that. My brother was a test in not doing something to send yourself to prison over beating a child. :eek: Oh the years my parents lost off their life because of my little bro.

I think a blanket statement of no physical correction to especially little ones is wrong but I think many parents don't have the control to wield the power. I don't know if I do.....but I know others at their wits end explode. I have seen it. I think beating on a 13yo is pointless. 2yo that might need a physical reminder to connect to the incident (like Skookum :D) might be warranted. :)

how can you reason w/ a small child? sometimes the only thing that works is violence. steal a cookie, get smacked. it teaches the child to learn how to steal and not get caught. we need more people like this, as they are the future leaders and CEO's of our country.

I've used a corrective swat to the diaper with my kid. It's more of a shock than it causes any pain. Once a kid is a toddler and out of diapers you can use more effective means like 'time-out'. My kid hated that and would rather take the spanking. Children need to know there are consequences for their actions. It actually makes them feel more secure knowing there are limits, but it's still their job to test these limits.

Now I'm not talking about a beating here. I've never used anything other than my open hand with the padding of a diaper. No belts or switches.

This balanced with positive reinforcment when they do well make for a easier job of parenting. But every child is different and you'll need to decide what works best.

yeah, in shool they didnt spank anyone.

but we had a gym teahcer that if you pissed him off, he would make you crawl the entire soccer field, or lay down and lift you feet together off the ground for like 10 minutes. or grab a basketball in each hand and straighten your arms in front of you for 15 minutes without moving them.
it doesnt sound bad, but its truly worse than get a ruler in the hands or a slap in the face.

i´d probably do that with my kids if i ever feel so enraged to like beat them up. and laugh loud at it as well.

If I did something they thought was bad enough to deserve a spanking, I'd be sent to my room or to a chair in the living room to wait for them. They'd come in and make me bend over their knee. If I refused they simply waited. When I finally gave in, it was always one really good smack that hurt like hell, but it was always on the butt. Afterwards, they'd tell me they loved me and explained why they did what they did. They always made sure that I knew that they spanked me not because they hated me, but because I had done something wrong. They NEVER hit me in public and they never hit me out of frustration or anger.

If done correctly, I have no problem with spanking. Its the idiots that you describe who do it out of anger who do it all wrong.

I love my parents dearly and I think they did an awesome job of raising me and my 3 siblings...spankings and all.
