View Full Version : Seriously considering getting out of DH

Holy crap is it expensive around here. Went to a bike shop to get fork oil to revive my broken boxxer. 1 bottle of spectra gold: $36.... same bottle in Seattle: $11. And they didn't have what I wanted anyway, so I left empty handed. I looked at some other stuff while I was there. dainese Safety jacket: $570

it's just retarded. I have big plans to buy a house in a year. I need to be saving my cash. Not to mention the season isn't exactly long out here either.

I should be able to get at least a couple grand (US) out of my yeti...

I'd likely hang onto my armour in case I change my mind in a couple of years, once I'm independantly wealthy....but until then...I dunno. I've hardly ridden this year, and I seem to be surviving. Looks like I am able to do without...

We'll see... Maybe I'm just suffering from the worst case of sticker shock I've ever felt.

tough call – only you know what is best Michael. I know for one that I couldn’t do without my DH bike. Even if I only rode it once every few months, I would like to know I have DH bike whenever I have the itch.

How is trail riding there Mike? Maybe you can sell the DH bike and just ride trails with your Heckler? I’m sure there are some good DJ’s there – you might want to start doing that? Get a good HT, which for the most part is cheap to maintain.

Selling your DH bike now might be a temp solution, but when you decided to get back into it, it won’t be any cheaper ;) Life is short bro – get the most out of it now while you still can.

One word...MAILORDER! Zedro buys his stuff from Go-Ride and saves a lot of $$$.

Fork oil: go to a MotoX store and buy it there. Might not be exactly spectra gold but will still be good for a boxxer (Moto International on St-Jacques St near Concordia Univ). The spectra oil you saw was in a bike shop (I'm pretty sure I know where you saw it) and was from a bike parts distributor...wayyyy too much markup.

Dainese armor?: Talk to Fraser. A friend of mine got a safety jacket off him and saved over a $100cdn.

I say since you already have a bike, it's paid off (I assume), even if you don't get as much riding in as you did in the US it's still worth it.

Come riding with Zedro and I and we can laugh at him breaking his derailleurs!

edit: One last thing. Last season, I went riding for one day and then sold my new BB7. I wasn't happy but I did survive. As soon as I found out I was living here for another year I started looking for a new bike. I guess that one season off really motivated me for the next.

Your Yeti is bought and paid for, why sell it for pennies on the dollar? It's not like the DH-9 is going to be old technology in the next few years or obsolete, so why not keep it around for a while?

You probably just need a break and do some other things for a while.

Yo Mike, lets not get crazy here!

www.denniskirk.com is the place to go, even tho their web site is down for a few more hours. You can get a bottle shipped for less than $11!

I live in Oklahoma (read FLAT) so I don't get much of a chance to ride my DH bike but I keep it for when the opportunity arrives. I ride road, XC and BMX to keep fit and skilled for when I can afford to get to the mountains. There is NO ONE here who sells DH gear so I am stuck with mailorder for parts and ridemonkey for advice. I am not trying to sway you, it makes no difference to me but I don't think I could get rid of my DH bike. Good luck with your decision. :)

I used to live in lawton and it was the best setup I ever had, because www.bikeusa.com (mud sweat and gears) is in lawton, and I had an awesome relationship with the owner, as far as him letting me go through the catalogs to order what i wanted, and price breaks. Take some time off. Pretend you pulled a hamstring or something.

DH is a difficult sport, especially if you are trying to "make" it racing.

This is ESPECIALLY true when you are going to college, racing all over the Nation, having your parents tell you that you're retarded and should just focus on road/track, rarely even getting a pat on the back, sacrificing play time with friends etc etc etc...arghhh

kidwoo
08-19-2004, 08:59 AM
True. Just ride xc you fatass. DH is for coasting loafers anyway. Seriously. If I had to streamline, my xc bike would be the only survivor.......no question. You can ride it anywhere and good god is it a cheaper endeavor.

ok, relax, take deep breaths...

the shop you went to can be fairly expensive at times, but sometimes they practically give away stuff too (like 888Rs for 1100$), it just depens on what you need. Just forget about the compulsive purchases for stuff you really dont need, KISS, and shop around for the big ticket items you need. If theres the odd part you may need, give me or chris a shout and we may have something in our bins.

I disagree about familly = give up hobbies. I think you're gonna need the outlet more than ever.....

I agree on the family bit - it's a sick bastard who gives up the things he / she loves to pursue a life of "suburban bliss" (carseats, lawn mower, tv... and nothing more) - I have 2 kids, but I look at my neighbor across the street leading a dreary, bikeless, hobby-less, child centered existence - leaving for work before dawn and returning around 8pm every evening, still in work clothes, and I'd rather put a bullet in my head than trade places. Fun and family don't have to be mutually exclusive ideas. Besides, who wants some fat bastard dad who thinks sitting around watching football is a good time?

Frankenschwinn
08-19-2004, 09:48 AM
I have two children and it is a balancing act. missing my kids activities is not really an option. They are only young once. quitting my hobbies is not an option either. It is all about the balance.

In mmike's situation, I say do what you think is best. You can always buy a new bike later, although it's gonna cost you.

cost is the reason why he's bitchin about it. So it wouldnt make much sense in that respect.

Plus, if he sells the bike, that $$$ will probably just be funelled into candleholders and new wallpaper for the wife and new home.

MMike
08-19-2004, 10:42 AM
I'm not talking about giving up all of my hobbies. Just maybe this one. I want to get back into sailing. I desperately need new skis. And I'll be doing a lot more of that now.

As for taking time off, I have already taken all of 2004 off. And I don't seem to miss it all that much. So I'm kinda tying up a fair amount of equity in an old bike right now.

I enjoy riding DH...but I dunno....we'll see. I'm likely talkin' crazy right now and won't do anything. But right now, every time I see my bike leaning against the wall in my basement I can't help but mutter "piece o' sh*t" under my breath......

But instead of possessing you to kill people, it makes you quit all you manly hobbies and makes you want to do ghey things like sailing, roller blading, and jazzercise. It also makes you say things like, no, male cheerleaders really are strong, and I really like the taste of Zima, because it leaves me feeling fresh and crisp like just after a good douche. :thumb:

Seriously Mike,
I would hang onto the bike over the winter. Most people who I know that sit out all year, can't wait to back on the DH bike come spring, and it will be alot cheaper to hang onto it now.
If come next year, you still don't have the desire for DH, then sell it then.
Good luck, and you can't ever go wrong with trailriding! Well, unless the Liberty tells you that it likes badmitton better. ;)

Hey don't be knocking sailing. I've done it my whole life. And that's a sport where I would still race. My dad races 2-3 times a week. I used to be pretty good too.....

And sailing is something I would get my kids into... I started when I was 10....

(And if you think that sailing isn't hard work, then you obviously must think that DH is just coasting down a hill too)

Well all I can say is...don't shoip at local bike shops. All the shops here are run by theifs, it is absolutely unbelieveable. I got the same sticker shock when i got back from Colorado.

As for armor, local shops actually mark it up 100%. Ya, keystone on a already expensive item. Smart. This explains why i am the #1 dainese bicycle armor retailer in Canada, and possibly NA at the moment. Only competition in the USA is Scoot, James and the good folks at go-ride, and we send each other customers so it works out well.

I for one sellt hat same jacket for $360, no tax and about $10 shipping. Shops are insane. (i know i know, they have to pay bills, but seriously...way to get stuck with it at 200 above MY price..and I make money off ther damn thing as well..so cmon..).

Get shock oil at moto shops, get everything else online. BTW if you still need oil gimme a call, i am heading to the west island tonight and i can bring you a bottle of rockoil.

Yesterday I bought some redline fork oil for $6 a quart at a moto shop. I dunno, maybe some bike people are scared to go into a moto shop but it's the same damn oil and way cheaper.

If you like riding but are just having sticker shock, don't sell your bike. With all the inexpensive good new stuff (hello, ironhorse) out there you'll have a tough time getting more than $2K. Then when you want to ride again, you'll need to buy another bike, get it dialed, etc. Right now you're all set up and can basically go hit it whenever you want.

I'd say keep your bike for at least another year and if you don't ride, then dump it. But be prepared to basically give it away.

But then, what would you expect the dh board to tell ya? ;)

MMike,

You know what's best for you. I'd hold onto that DH bike of yours until come next spring and see how you feel. Don't limit yourself to the sticker shock in your area. There are other fellow bikers on RM that are willing to help you out along with other avenues to buy bike parts (mail order, ebay, classifieds, etc). If you don't feel anything, sell it. If you've got the itch, well... errr... you know what to do!

I've seen alot of people at the aparment complex that I live in that have an existence around kids and have nothing to offer besides the kids. Often times I would ask them what they like to do for fun and a common answer I would get is a pause and an answer like "ummm, I don't have much time..." or "I spend alot of time with the kid(s), so..." or similar. I'd shoot myself if my existance was soley dependent on the kids. Hobbies are a great way to keep yourself sane and get away from the everyday **** associated with life. Your wife and/or kids may take up on your hobbies, which will make it even more enjoyable & fun. Drinking beer and parking your a$$ on the couch while the tube runs, IMO, is no way to live life.

My $0.02

If you are short on dough, get a hardtail with SC's. Dont make money an excuse

Ride DH on that, its not as fast or comfortable, but you can dirt jump, trail ride and do XC, and generally do a whole lot more than you can with a 9 inch beast.

If time is an issue then get the kid adopted.

Jay's really the only place i go anymore....

And I may debate the skiing in the east vs west. (I've said this before), the skiing in Seattle was overall pretty crappy. Very hit and miss. Sure you could get 15" of snow overnight....which would then prompty turn rain and then the 15" turns into 8" of peanut butter.

I've had both the best day of skiing of my life and the worst at Baker.

I actually WOULD prefer to ski on ice than in some of the crud you get in the Cascades

But we're digressing.

So Chris sure has some big head doesn't he?

I think everyone here gets the that 'panicky' feeling once in a while. I know if I go look at my bike and see my Romic shock leaking, I think "piece of ****e!" and the thought crosses my mind: 'What am I doing?? I've spent so much money on this bike and I still need upgrades and repairs and I have to save money for other more important things in life. Should I cut my losses and sell everything???' This happens especially when my bank manager calls me asking what the hell I'm doing!

I guess it passes after a while because then you're excited you're going riding with a buddy or two. I know for me DH riding isn't all about the actual 'riding' but also talking with people, joking around...things like that. I say before anyone gets out of the sport, go riding with a buddy and see how you feel afterwards.

are there any moto-x tracks around there?
You can do that w/o any hills..
I just hate the hassle of shuttling w/ people i don't really know all that well & sometimes it just doesn't feel like a brotherhood at all..
I am thinking 4x only + trailriding on my S-Speed..
or MOTOCROSS !!ya know hare-scrambles :stupid:
good luck..

I'm not whining about how much it costs because I'm poverty-stricken. Far from it.

Can I have some money? Sounds like you have more than me and all I want is a bike, nothing expesive like a boat or anything. I'll be like one of Sally Strothers' adopted kids you can communicate with through various media of correspondence. I'll send you pictures of how happy I am with the new bike, how I can't wait to come to canada, how appeciative I'm going to be when you let me marry your daughter and gain citizenship. C'mon. It'll be fun.

No MX tracks around here unless you're ready to drive for a couple hours at the very least.

I have to admit that sailing is big here...

You look at the water in the summer and all you see are boats, big and small. Apparently it's pretty well organized too. I went to highschool with a bunch of guys that used to race those little boats...called 'lazers' or something like that?

When I was 7 or 8, I used to go to Champlain Lake in NY and spend my summers on our 27ft sailboat...when you get going with the sails up it's a lot of fun...especially when it's raining hard and the wind is crazy.

Ok...I've called Moto Internationale and the place in Ile Perrot and nobody has any idea what I'm talking about. Moto Int'l "only has fork oil for Harleys". And he would not tell me what weight it was.

MMike's getting frustrated!!

they won't tell you a weight because there isn't a weight listed on the bottle... it's just generically called "harley fork oil" I think it's pretty heavy...

At Moto Int'l they have different oil weights...they have to since they sell MX bikes. That's where I bought my oil. I think I bought 10w and 15w. They also have 20w.

Well I wasn't about to trek all the way the christ out to St. Jacques not knowing that they had it FOR SURE... I called Newman (hello newman), and they said they ordinarily had it but were out of stock.

I caved and went back to Paul cycle and bought the Rock Shox brand. crooks...Whatever. Don't care. It's fixed now....I have swapped out my lowers. I'm sure it's going to start leaking like crazy on my first run. I really wish I had noticed that my rotor was bent all to hell too, so I could have fixed everything. So maybe I'll get one tomorrow for 1 billion dollars. I'm pissed that it's bent. I was pretty pleased with myself that I was on my original rotor with this bike ('02) and had never bent it. Oh well.

So Bromont could be a strong possiblity next weekend. Of course it will likely rain.... or hail....or locusts....or toads....or there will be a tsunami....even though we're really far from the ocean....

Oh and also, if you had come to that race this weekend in hull, you would have fallen in love with riding bikes again. It is by far my favorite race of the year.

The course was dry, dusty, rough and so much fun. The organizing was a whole other matter, but whatever, it was worth it for the ride!

was it Motul? because i've been using Motul synthetic 5-10wt for two years now and its the best oil i've tried. The store i usually get it from was out so i had to replace one leg with Bel-Ray 7wt and its totally turned my fork to crap.

I can't remember (it was when i was on a rampage to find 2.5wt). I do remember a black bottle with a large harley logo on it tho! The same moron also told me that 2.5 wt didn't exist, and challenged me to show him an empty bottle. I then brought him a bottle of rock oil and he looked dumbfounded. incredible.

It gets better.... Oh and I only went there so I can get my bike running again. But I won't be going back....

Today at Paul's Cycle, after tax, I paid $92.01 (CDN) for one (1) Hayes brake rotor.

"Oh support the poor struggling LBS! Wah wah wah!!"

Mail order here I come.

(and fraser, no worries....)

And as for missing the race, well instead today I went to the Teddy Bear Picnic at Centennial Park. Kids could bring their teddy bears to be examined and treated by "health care professionals". (for a good cause). Saw my buddy and his clan there too.

I'm a family guy now....

Glad to hear it was a good time though....................

You only have to deal with their high and mighty attitude, when they are really el-kabong hacks with most things.

As for the price on a rotor. OUCH. Seriously, that is insane for a rotor. Aren't they like $19.99 usd retail?? Screw LBS', there isn't any even half decent ones in this city.

also mr family guy, GET OUTTA MY HEAD!

Hey Bro! Sorry to hear Montreal isn't appealing to your dh sensibilities. I don't think you should bother to sell anything especially since your trail bike will be as much use to you in Mntl as your Yeti. You gotta drive 45-60 minutes in any direction to get to some descent riding either way.

On my end, I just convinced Specialized to replace my front triangle! I was showing it off to a buddy here at work when I brought it along for an afternoon ride through the Pilchuck farm and he noticed my down tube was totally crippled in! I wonder how that happened? Lower A-line, thou shalt be conquered! I brought it to your old local dealer and sure enough, the warranty guy bought the fact that it was obviously a material defect due to the heat-affected zone near the weld which must have weakened the structural integrity of the frame... I'll post some pix on the PNW thread.
