What is the best way to sell a DH rig? This is a lightly used bike that I have spent about 10k on. Would you suggest parting it out or selling it whole? Also how RM, E-Bay, other? Thanks for your help.

How do you spend $10,000 on a downhill bike? What frame and parts?

I'll take it off your hands for 10k!

Yeah... uh... You'll be lucky to get 3k for any DH bike

I recommend RM unless it won't sell, then try ebay. More people watching ebay, but RM peeps is good peeps.

Also the MTBR classifieds get a lot of views, but will cost you $3 or so.

First off, list it in the classified section. WITH A PIC!
List the complete bike in one section and the frame in another.
In one week you will get replies or PMs on your listings. If nobody is intrested at that time you put it on ebay but you have to go to different mountain biking forums and list the ebay link on the classifieds (even if it cost a few bucks). If the bike doesn't sell complete on ebay in 7 days then you will have to part it out and do the same thing.

By the way, you said your bike cost $10k.
You must have a Brooklyn big link with a Avalanche mtn10 and a rear AVY Ti in the rear. Right?

Doubt it? It is a BMW Race Link with a Avy. DHF fork. It has all the goods Ti spring, Dura-Ace Ti cassette, Ti spindle, Sram X-O, Carbon Bars, all the best parts (as I see It). I have not heard of many people spending more then 3k used? Thats why I was wondering if anybody has experiance with parting them out and doing any better?

Again not trying to spam, but a couple people asked wat it was.

Maybe he meant 10k lire or 10k yen or maybe 10k Australian dollars.

Don't worry about not hearing of people not spending more then 3g on a used bike because it's not a Brooklyn. You would be surprized how many people w/ $$$ are out there who want Race Links.

Let's bring this discussion to the classified section. WITH PICS!

Nobody's upset, just joking around. It's just that I've never heard of spending more than maybe 6-7k, let alone 10k.

Thanks I'm not upset and I wouldn't doubt it because the retail of my bike is about 7-8 gees, and I don't have an Avy fork.

Race link with avy mtn shock with ti spring will run you about 4 k (MTN shock is about $250 more than the regular avy, plus $ for Ti spring)
avy mtn8 fork= $3300, plus $100 for anti-bottoming system, another $100 for internal bleed non-recirculating system.
right there you've got $7500 for frame and fork.

that leaves you with about $2500 for wheels, brakes, bar, stem, headset, pedals, etc. figure a super high end wheelset is $800 including build. another $150 for a king steelset, $500 for hope 6pots, $125 for tires and tubes, $50 for a protaper (or $140 for an easton carbon dh), another $75 for a stem, $75 for a seat, $75 for a thomson post, $110 for shinburgers, shifter, derailleur, chain, grips, etc, and we're at like $9500. that's 10 grand as far as i'm concerned.

I have a new opinion on how to sell the bike and that opinion is two short words long. It goes a little something like this:

insurance fraud

Wow. I had no idea any frame or fork could be that expensive. I guess the only thing harder to justify than buying those is selling them. Hey Smithers, is that what you want to sell?

How the heck did this turn into a discussion of how, exactly, he spent 10k? Who cares? He asked how to sell his bike. Maybe he had his frame gold plated. It doesn't really matter...

Smithers, I hope you're not holding onto some dream that you might actually get close to what you paid for it back. But I think with a bike like that, your best bet might be to be very patient and part it out on cycling websites. It's too bad, I bet the bike is pimp as-is, but most people have a hard time swallowing $3k+ on a used bike.

Things always sell best if you're detailed with descriptions and post lots of pictures. I myself am swayed by some nice, high quality pictures of the goods - find a good digital camera, and take pictures in good light. If you're not computer or camera savvy, have a friend who is take care of it. Nothing worse than grainy, poorly lit pictures at bad angles. Also, if you part it out don't post pictures of the built-up bike as substitute for individual pictures of the parts.

That or people who post "frame for sale good condition email for more information and pictures". I've never yet actually emailed someone to get basic information about the item they're selling - that should be in the ad.

Most of selling is common sense, just be very thorough with your descriptions and people will be much more inclined to drop the extra money for a nice part. Also, if you have the time to deal with all the emails, you can post on many sites - Ridemonkey, NSMB, Pinkbike, etc.

I think parting it out is the way to go...

You'll probably get more people interested in the parts rather than the entire bike. If you list it as the entire bike, you'll inevitably get inquiries about parting it out.

Would it even be possible to spend 10k on a Full on Best parts ever FOES DHS? You might come close I bet.

Part it out. More people are looking for frames and parts than complete bikes. People who are spending that much money want to spec everything themselves. Open a ebay account and part the whole thing out. I have sold some thing on ebay were people get into bidding wars and you actually get more than you paid for the item. Sometimes you get lucky.

I'd go straight to ebay. I had a frame I posted here for $250, after 2 weeks it hadn't sold, it didn't even have one inquiry so I put it up on ebay with a $250 reserve and ended up getting $325 for it plus the buyer payed shipping. Parting out the bike will bring in more. Most people aren't looking for a complete bike just some parts to hop-up their current bike. You should be able to get $1500-$2000 for a frame and shock, if it's in good condition. A fork should fetch $500 or so, cranks will bring in a hundred, BB $30, handlebar, $40, Seat post $40... It will add up to more than what you'd get trying to sell complete.

seeing as I know someone who has spent more on a bike, it's not that hard to get to 10k. :thumb:

I'd say keep it or part it out if you have to, selling as a complete bike you're not going to get more than 3-4000 for it. The most expensive bike that someone's bid on on ebay right now is 2700. Aside from $4500 for the Ferrari/Colnago mtb, the highest someone won a bike was $3600. If someone wants to pay over 4 grand for a bike, they will probably want to customize it.

(I still say keep it. :stupid: )

I paid 10K for my rig too, but is was a 2000 Toyota Tacoma. Paid less than 2K for a Kona Stinky Primo that rips as hard as yours!

look, now it's a new guy pissing contest!

Anyways smithers, best bet will be to sell the bike for parts. The frame shoudl be an easy sell as they are popular and hard to come by.

I would sell it at mtbr.com. My for sold in about 15 minutes there. It isn't full of e-Bay geeks and scammers. It is a division of Consumer Reviews, so it is relatively safe.

huh?

You doubt it will be an easy frame sell? Aparently you have no clue about the fervor some people have for BMW bikes.
