If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place, oblige it to control itself. ~ James Madison, Federalist No. 51, February 8, 1788

Thought I recognized that quote.....it was right at the end.
Interesting read. I wonder how a equally candid look at the liberal voting base would go? I hear they are one big think tank. Full of the worlds most free and independent critical thinkers....or so they pride themselves. ;)
I had missquoted James Madison in my signature. I had "If men were angels, we would need no laws" or something...:o:

I think it would be a little different. You don't have to look hard to find liberals who dislike Clinton or Kerry.
It's that unshakeable faith that God has appointed our leader to stop the horrible persecution that we are undergoing that liberals lack. We just can't compete.

You lib's absolutely can't stand someone who has Faith in a God.. In fact Libs are quite biggoted against POF (persons of faith). I am not a christian but I don't nessessarily believe it's a 'scary' trait.
Lib's tend to be negative and don't have faith in anything including themselves.... or their fellow man's ability to do things without someone telling them what to do... or thinking they need a handout. Sad really....

N8, if you care to understand, it's not a belief in God that is seen as dangerous but a belief in the divine appointment of George W Bush as God's representative on earth.
As for the negativity, that applies to both sides of the partisan divide.

Nah... I'm not buying it.
Few, if anyone, believes that.
However, if blame for Bush's election (and probable re-election) must be applied, then lib's truly have to look at their relationship with Clinton and Algore. Because of how inappropreate the Clinton administration were caused the American people to elect someone who was in no way related to it. Kerry has too many ties to Clinton and that is one of the things that will cuse him not to be elected.

I think folks are taking something out of context. If you read the Bible "W" is divinely appointed, it does not mention him specifically. When Jesus is arrested and is chatting with Pilate, He tells Pilate that he wouldn't have the power he has if it weren't for The Father putting him there. The implication of the Text is, this government official was in office and had the power he does because God intended for him to be there (or something to that effect).
Anyway, if W is running around with a Jim Jones "God sent me here" type attitude then that's scary, but I don't think that is the case.

So by that logic Saddam was also divinely appointed. What does 'W' think he's doing going against God's divine will eh?

They don't have blind faith in God...OK my fiance's mother does have a blind faith in God and the church and is a Democrat/Liberal. Just one simple example...not to draw conclusions.
They have blind faith in themselves....everyone want to beleive that they are right. God is the current chopping block, and probably for a reason.
Dem's if they don't have a blind faith in God at least have a blind faith in other Dem's/Liberals. Fundimentally that is no different. Justification baised on a group affiliation is justification all the same.

If you're done with the ad hominems, kindly explain to me why chruch attendance is one of the best indicators as to how you will vote in the upcoming election.
I'm all ears...

And many conservatives just love people with faith. Like John Kerry...If you read the article though, he just goes to Mass for political reasons. George goes to get direction from God (and by my scorecard, he's doing pretty damn bad.)
As long as they are Christian. I've talked to more than one conservative who believes the following: "We have freedom of religion in this country: You can serve Jesus any way you want."
Oh, by the way...
Continental: Complaints Led to Drop-'Doonesbury' Poll
By Dave Astor
Published: July 21, 2004 11:50 AM EST, updated at 1:20 PM
NEW YORK A poll that resulted in a vote to drop "Doonesbury" was defended by the head of a Sunday-comics consortium.
"It was not a political statement of any kind," Continental Features President Van Wilkerson told E&P. "I personally don't have an opinion about 'Doonesbury' one way or another."
Wilkerson said he conducted the survey because Garry Trudeau's comic "created more controversy than other strips." In the poll e-mail he sent Continental's newspaper clients this spring, Wilkerson wrote: "(I)t is my feeling that a change in one of the features is required. I have fielded numerous complaints about 'Doonesbury' in the past and feel it is time to drop this feature and add another in its place. ... If the majority of the group favors a replacement, you will be expected to accept that change."
Of the 38 papers that run the Continental-produced Sunday comics section, 21 wanted to drop "Doonesbury," 15 wanted to keep it, and two had no opinion or preference. "I wouldn't call the vote [to drop 'Doonesbury'] overwhelming, but it was a majority opinion," Wilkerson said.

It's not the faith in god that is bad, it's the blind faith in leaders who use god's name that is scary. Just like when Clinton went on television to apologies about Monica, he had a bible in his hands... it's using other people's faith in a malicous way - W has done that since day 1.
However, if blame for Bush's election (and probable re-election) must be applied, then lib's truly have to look at their relationship with Clinton and Algore. Because of how inappropreate the Clinton administration were caused the American people to elect someone who was in no way related to it.
Actually Gore's insistance to keep his didstance from Clinton is something that hurt him...
Like John Kerry...If you read the article though, he just goes to Mass for political reasons.
 Which article? The one I read was a bunch of opinions, none of it was attributed to statements either candidate has made. When did John K come out and tell everyone that is what he was doing the church thing for politicial reasons?

So the fact that the NEWPAPER (i.e. big company) wanted to drop it means what? Typical Repub BS - talk to the big corporate boys and do not ask the PEOPLE what they want...

Here is the relevant part from the article I linked to:
Instead I challenge the grandmotherly lady sitting on the piano bench.
Says Delores: "There is an agenda—to get rid of God in our country."
Chirps the reporter: Certainly not on the part of John Kerry, who once entertained dreams of entering the priesthood.
I'm almost laughed out of the room.
I ask why Kerry goes to mass every week if he's trying to get rid of God. "Public relations!" a young man calls out from across the room. "Same reason he does everything else." Cue for Delores to repeat something a rabbi told her: "We have to stand together, because this is what happened in Europe. You know—once they start taking this right and that right. And you have the Islamic people . . . "
She trails off. I ask whether she's referring to the rise of fascism. "We're losing our rights as Christians: yes. And being persecuted again."
