it'd be interesting to get their perspective on the new fad... faux bar mitzvah...

As families in Cuyahoga County's eastern suburbs already know, it's sparking a huge trend among non-Jewish preteens who crave to party it up on their birthdays just as their Jewish friends do as part of their bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs.

Could this become the new phenomenon of pro-semitism?

That has a slightly worrying aspect as being Jewish may be come as trendy as being gay, so there may be a neo-conservative backlash.

I can see the protests now (permits permitting obviously), gay people marching for equal rights to bar-mitzvahs for non-Jews.

I'd be a Jew if it didn't require slicing the skin off my penis - is there any way around that?

haha, Aunt Flo's a jew?! Very cool. 0.1% sounds aobut right for Peru *shrugs* A buddy of mine, yes jew, is now living in Brasil. What's that got to do with anything, yeah, dunno.

however, I just came from a jewish happy hour -- man, I dunno about the jewish girls you've seen, but this one had nearly a dozen hot women. Four of 'em would definitely be classified as smoking. And I'm shallow, so you know they are. My mojo got all fvcked tho when an ex-g/f showed up.

Jewish happy hour? I wish we had somthing like that around here!

I've been trying to stick to Jews since I broke up with my last GF, who was Mormon. That was over a year ago. I find that most Jewish Girls I come across are either
A. Ugly
B. Slutty
or C. JAPs

I just cannot find a nice Jewish Girl :(

Anyway, back on topic. I am Jewish. I am not necissarily a "practicing" Jew, but.....

I had a Bar-Mitzvah, and I think this whole faux mitsvah thing is rediculous. I dont think that it has to do with me being Jewish that I think it is rediculous either. If someone came out and said they were going to have a faux baptism or a faux conformation, I would think that is rediculous also.

If you want to have a big party for you kid, thats fine, but why model it after B'nai Mitzvot? I feel that is a mockery of ancient tradition of the Jewish people.

I think that what most kids dont understand is that a Bar Mitzvah is NOT just a big party. Its years and years of schooling and studying.
In Judaism, the bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah ceremonies are the culmination of a long process, capping off years of study of faith and of the Hebrew language.

When I had my Bar-Mitzvah, I only invited a few of my close friends to the actual service. The rest of my friends just got invited to the party. It was a combination bar-Mitzvah/13th birthday party, as most are.

The few friends that I invited to the service found out that it is not just a party.

There are the Friday Night and Saturday morning services, both led by the child. that is A LOT of pressure and responsibility. I have gone to the same synagauge since I was born. We have a congragation of a few hunded (dont know the exact number) Getting up on the Bemah ("stage") and leading all those people in prayer is a big deal. Then there is the first time that you are called to read from the Torah, which by some is seen as the most important thing in your life. (and by the way, for those of you that don't know about Hebrew, The Torah does not include any vowels or the notes that need to be sung. That is all learned on top of how to read it and what you are reading) then there is the Haftorah, another thing read and chanted by the child who's Bar/Bat Mitzvah it is.

After the Saturday morning service, then there is the Kiddush. That is where people eat, and everyone comes up and congradulates you. then........after all that, is the party.

Then, sometimes there is Brunch the next day for out of town relatives, but that doesnt really have anything to do with this.

I dont know if my above post makes any sense, but it all comes down to this:

It is many years (6+) of preperation and studying that brings a young Jewish child to Bar mitzvah. It is not all directly related to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah per se, but as a child you learn the history of the Jewish people.

Learning about the Holocaust and everything that surrouds it at 11 years old is pretty tough, especially when your friends at school have no idea whats up, and that you are going to school Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings, plus services/classes on Saturday morning in addition to regular public school.
