ok, I know this is stupid, but I got a new set of grips and they just won't go on, I replaced a few in my time and they are always a bitch, but I can't get these to move.

Anybody got some tricks?

yeah, hairspray is a nice one...
compressed air if you have it...
isopropyl alcohol is also good, when you first put them on, theyll slide, but once the alcohol dries its gravy....

The best tip you will ever get is to just chuck them and get some ODI Lockon's. :thumb:

What kinda grips are they? I agree with the hairspray, try coke or any other acidic soda as well.

They are grips that use a locking clamp:

They obviously come in a bunch of styles but when you put the clamps on they lock down, when you unscrew the clamps they slide right off without any fuss:

put a bunch of rubbing alcohol in them and they'll slip right on. Just make sure you don't use the bike till they're dry.

Only way to go...I tried one set and no longer use standard grips.

I almost cried when I found lock-on grips. It was like a religious experience...

Try them. Come over to the dark side. You'll never go back...

yep, lock ons. Ruffians have the added benefit of felling better with age. kinda like prepubescent girls.

Lock-ons are the way to go - just don't over-tighten the screws!

I've been using rubber cement to secure my grips. They work well, but I've been wanting to check thoss Oury's out, the look pretty sweet.

Commpressed air is the best because there is nothing to "gunk" up ur bars when u take them off... if you can becasue some one is using rubber cemnt which i have never seen. Air will be the best because you put them on and ride untill you need the new grips, and you take them off the same way... air... you know how hard it would be trying to get grips off with rubber cement on them... damn hard... n'ways... one i got ODI Ruffians i will never go back unless they break which they tend to do sometimes.

I've never had a normal rubber grip "break." Seems like reason enough not to use lock ons to me.

Why simply remove and replace. Although in 2 years I have never broken a set.

Huh?

I don't use lockons because normal grips break. I use lockons because the grips don't rotate, and you don't have to wrestle with them to get them off.

The bonus is that the Ruffian grip is probably the best I've ever used.

If you ride in hot and or wet weather and are the kind of rider who pulls hard on the grips, standard grips don't last long. They get stretched and loose and then let in water and sweat and they will come off. I remember loading bikes off the Grouse Tram after a rainy race. I would guess that 75% of the bikes had loose grips and many were missing a grip. Wires will help but all they really do is help keep the water out.

Lock ons once you try them are an instant revelation. You realize that regular grips, even if they feel solid, aren't. The only exception I've ever seen are foam grab ons. They go on and never ever move. At least in my experience. I prefer the feel od a rubber grip though.
