I'm looking at replacing my XT rear derailler with a X.9. How can I tell if I have a medium cage or a long cage or does it even matter? Are there advantages with one over the other? Thanks for the help.

You will need to get a new shifters for the X.9 rear derailleur because of the SRAM 1:1 ratio. Shimano uses a 2:1 ratio. If you are running a 3x9 set up then you will need the long cage to pick up the chain slack. If you run a 2x9 then you can use the medium cage without any problems.

i have the x.9 system. first off it is amazing. it is so much better than the shimano stuff. i currently ride an hardtail fr bike and i have 2 chainrings and the long cage x.9 rear der. so far i have had no problems with chain slap( there is a lack of it). this is mainly due to the way the sram ders are made and work. the sram system also shifts much more smoothly and quickly.

i personlly think shimano has the biggest compatition that they have ever seen!!
