View Full Version : Barspin-Capable Freerider

(Posted this over at PB, but am wondering what the Monkeys think.)

So...I'm probably getting a FS sometime soon, and want to be able to do barspins on it.

I've got my hardtail set up to spin by running front brake cable through a freestyle star nut and running rear brake, front and rear derailer cables long. This works well, and I'm wondering how well it'll transfer to a FS bike.

I'm probably getting an AS-X with the Sherman Breakout (1.5 Head Tube).

- Does the 1.5 steer tube use traditional star nuts, or special oversized ones? When I first built my bike they didn't make freestyle star nuts so I dremmeled it out. I can do this again, but would rather run a star nut with a hole in it already.

- Will I run into problems running hydraulic cables long and twisting them 'round the head tube? Cables on my hardtail get chunked up sometimes.

- Anyone else done this? Advice?

1.5 headtube use i bigger star nut, and you will propblaby occur a problem with the hydrolic line getting tangled up. My advice?


Get a bmx bike if ya wann do it

I just drilled through the top cap and then straight down through the star nut. I drilled as close as possible to the steerer tube.

How do you intend to shift?

I'm gonna run the other cables long. Only good for one spin, then have to unspin 'em. I do this on my 24.

The only thing I'm really worried about is the rear hydraulic brake line not liking to be spun. Anyone have any experience with this?

You could get a goodridge line just for the rear. Those things are really hard to kink, as in I've tried to kink one and I couldn't do it. They also have a plastic jacket, a metal jacket, and the inner line so they're pretty beefy. I think one line shoulnd't be too terribly expensive, something like $36 I think.

I've tried and I just can't do barspins on my AS-X, I don't think it's the cables though I think it's the DC fork I've got on it. :D

If you run really long cables you could pull off a bar spin but you'll have a tough time keeping your shifters adjusted. Another thing to consider is if you can actually find cables long enough. My rear shift cable only had about 10 inches past the locknut before I clipped it. Unless you want to get tandem cables you may not be able to get a shift cable long enough for a full spin.

The cables all run down the down tube, I don't know if the cable stops will be in a less than ideal place for doing bar spins. It seems like the cables might want to wrap around the stem and break your shifters and break levers if you're not careful.

i believe that woodman make a freestyle head lock for the 1.5 standard. which means you can run to cable thuoght the headlock. as for the shifter calbes leaving them long should do the trick
