Help Me With Single Speed!!!

I have a normal wheel with cassette right now, but I don't know if I have to switch the hub to a single speed hub. SOMEONE HELP ME OUT!! THANKS ALOT!

There is a spacer kit that will situate a single rear sprocket on the hub out there. Check into a lbs that is into SS and they will know. Oh and you are welcome.

Or, many shops will take apart old cassettes and save the spacers. Just run a stack of those. And to make it stiffer, run 2 identical cogs sandwiched together and a BMX chain. Some people I know take it one steo further and use 2 more cogs, grind the teeth off, and set them up like a guide. I don't know/think it does much, but it does look cool. I have even heard of people making spacers out of a piece of PVC pipe.

If you go to your local shop that has the shims you need, while you're there pick up a BMX cassette cog from shimano. The cog will be compatible with your cassette body, and it will not have shifting ramps. Try the soulcraft converter, pricey but worth it.

axiom (norco) makes a single speed tensioner that works with youre cassette and alows you to adjust it to work with any gear on the back. I used one on my bommer, a little tricky to set up but worked great.

You can use left over worn out cassettes - by taking them apart and using the spacers in there... you can do the PVC tubing from home depot - just cut it to legnth, and you can buy aluminum spacers (Wheels Mfg, Novatec, etc) from your LBS to do it, and also there is a kit made my Spot that is a nice std freehub converter. There are quite a few SS riders that use regular freehub wheels over the SS specific wheels.

since the LBS has more BS than actual know-how, you guys are a better source (don't let it inflate your ego though!)

ok, now that the rear cogset is taken care of, what about the front chainring? Is there a spacer for that? And what type of gearing should I be looking for - do I use the small or middle ring - or something in between? I'm actually doing this on a road bike though (I found the bike during a local town "spring cleaning"). Most parts are still good, but I wanted to "play" and make it a SS since I already have a commuter road bike.

on a road bike, not sure which ring to use, depends on your terrain and what cog size you chose in the rear...I would guess to go with the middle or big ring. Try both and see which is better? You need to get single or bmx chainring bolts to just run one ring, your LBS should have them. Looks like you have horizontal dropouts, so you are all good.

thanks for the info. i'll try to check it out this weekend... yea, the dropouts are horizontal. well, sort of on an angle anyway, but close enough to pull some tension into the chain.

i did some playing by riding a bit at different gears, and i'm going to use the front smaller ring (only 2 rings) butnot sure which on the back. probably something in the middle...
