Toshi...You'll come to find that 10:30 and sunday are NOT in my vocab :D seriously tho, I'm shooting for more like 12 or so, we've got alot more daylight now, and it may be bloody hot during the day, I'd rather ride later and clearer headed, I've had a rough week of construction work and Fire school, I'm definately gonna live it up this weekend...

If anyone wants to ride urban downtown PDX give me a call. I ride almost everyday after work, M-F 7:00-3:30 pm. My wrist has been bothering me lately so I've been keeping it fairly mellow, mostly manualling and low impact stuff with the odd stair gap thrown in.

It sounds like me and some friends are going to do the "Sincline trail" tomorrow. If you aren't familiar with it, it's across the river from Hood River in Washington. About three miles out past Bingin on 14 to the left. We shuttle to the top. There are a couple of different ways down, both way fun twisty sigletrack with a variety of natural obstacles.
We usually go out and do fast DH runs with drops, jumps and such but two of us are trying to get healed up so this trail is a good choice.
We are leaving Portland about 10:30, should be out there before noon. See ya out there.

I rode Syncline and Post Canyon today, just got home, great fun. First time getting my new bike in the dirt and riding hard since hurting my wrist. The upper trails at PC are really dry, dusty, and slippery.
I think were heading out there tommorrow.

another weekend of good riding with :monkey:s has passed. :thumb: i'm going to be in some discomfort, if not outright pain, for the next few days tho. ow. poor me.

anyway, here's advance notice of a friday daytime ride at falls city. i have the week off from work  for better or worse, and i want to expand my weekend warrior horizons.

edit: i think i'm going to bail on friday and this weekend. going to boston to hang out :thumb:

Sorry I didn't get to hook up with you guys this weekend, I was too busy riding!

Hit PC on Friday evening to preview a new trail called 8-Track. Not yet officially open, but a good intermediate FR descent with good flow.

On Saturday it was Mary's Peak for some of the best technical XC the state has to offer. Check it out if you get down around Corvallis.

Sunday morning was a fitness climb up to Nestor's Peak here in HR. Super fast, rippy descent makes it worthwhile, give it a try in spring or fall for best conditions.

Sunday evening was PC again. Trying to work up the 'nads to hit the teeter on GP, and then doing balancing acts on that new skinny at the bottom of Dropout. Good fun!

I believe the GFRA maps of PC are now done and in the local bike shops. They should be helpful in getting oriented and finding new stuff to hit.

Hey Thruster, we just missed ya on Sat. I noticed your pimp-mobile on the way down as we were headin up to the top. We were there around 4:00.
I think I'll be there this Sat. since I have to work and wont be able to ride untill like 3 or 4.
Anyone else in for Leadbetters sat afternoon?

zane
05-04-2004, 11:56 AM
I'd love to ride in the afternoon this week, but I just started a new job at UPS (M-F, twilight shift- 5:30-9:00) and I get off school at 2:10, so for the rest of this term I have pretty much no time during the week to ride. Hopefully for next term my schedule will allow more riding on weekdays!

Well, I was gonna ask Toshi if he was going to PC this weekend but I just read that he's bailing for boston....

So, is anyone else going to PC this weekend?

frizanko, any details about leadbetter on saturday? Time, place, etc...
( I haven't been there yet, we could meet somewhere or you could PM/call me with directions- 360-904-0279 cell )

About shuttling- I'll be driving a subaru with a bike rack (can hold 3 bikes and 3 people inside w/gear, and I'll probably have another friend with me so that's room for 1 more), or I can be the shuttle retrieval vehicle...either way works for me.

I work untill 2:00 so Im thinkin like 3:30 or 4:00... Its not too hard to find. Just head straight out 1st st. from 164th towards Camas. Its about a 5 min. drive out to the Lacamas lake boat launch parking area... Thats where we usually meet. As far as shuttleing goes... I'm working on getting someone with a truck to come out too, otherwise Im sure we can work something out pretty easily.. Most of the time we end up just sessioning different sections anyway.

i hit the teeter today! and promptly rode off the side of the ladder (thankfully on the ground). another highlight was watching a few guys from another group ride the skinny connecting post between the two platforms on upper gp. er, that didn't make much sense now. hmm. :D

overall the ride rocked. :thumb: frizanko, get_some, their non-rm buddy and eknomf all showed, and we got two full runs in which makes the ~120 mi of driving entirely worth it imo.

Man, a buddy of mine off NSMB was at PC on Sunday, riding in Oregon for the first time and his buddy wouldn't show him the upper shuttle areas, they rode XC all day, and he was pissed, what made it worse is I had the trailer and Jeep, and could have found room for him, but we didn't hook up...GHe said he was mucho impressed with the area though, and rightfully so eh ;)

So, WHO'S RIDING THIS WEEKEND? And where are you going? If there's a group going out to PC I may hook up with them, if not maybe a trip to larch could be arranged. I'm up for just about anything, so let me know.

Edit- If we do something local we could also hit some portland urban, or maybe use MAX to shuttle the zoo trails (I haven't done that yet, but maybe someone else has and can show us the good stuff)

Whistler was freakin amazing! We stopped on the way and rode Seymore in the rain, but still had a blast. The weather cleared for Sun.& Mon. And it was bright and sunny. We hit practically everything but kept going back to Dirt Merchant and A-line over and over.
I got beat down pretty good after stackin a few times, but Chuck only took one fall the whole time there. A nasty scorpion off a stairstep rockface. He brushed it off like it was nothing though.
I cant wait to go back...

cool, i'll do so in the future. i rushed home today, only to realize that my z1 is at marzocchi and the rigid fork off my xc bike needs about 1.5" more steerer tube to work on the evil... so i'm out of commission for a while at least :dead:

I was at Whistler 2 days last summer It's mountainbike heaven and the best place to ride but I didn't find any 30 foot drops like the Superman is when hit at full speed. Most stuff at Whistler is pretty tame to keep the tourists safe. I think the tabletops on crabapple hits were the biggest jumps there but they seemed pretty basic considering the long straight-away. At Ledbetter I measured the Junkyard Tabletop at the foot of Superman 40' to clear, 60' to flat.
My section at Ledbetter called Wyte Line has a ladder to 10' drop to 25' kicker over a deep gap with rough rolling landing followed by the 30' downhill triple with a wooden kicker step up over the ditch (20') at the end. Nothing at Whistler or Post Canyon can touch that.

thruster
05-26-2004, 09:57 PM
Your measurement is way off, the junkie is more like 20' to 25' tops to clear the tabletop and I can bet you that most of the riders that have rode leadbetter would agree. As for the Wyte line you built it look good until you had the step-up ramp which was impossable to clear even you couldn't clear it thats why it was taken down.
Well leadbetter is pretty much dead not much left. The new trails are kicka**.

nice pics... I recognize those... I belive that the superman hill as a whole is pretty huge, but you could never hit it to flat, that's unpossible ;) neither drop is that gnarly, it's the run out hat can be sketch eh, really rutted on the right, and really narrow on the left. is your line the one up in the gullry that has that huge gap and than a hit with no landing over on the left looking up the ravine? there are some hits in there that are just not rideable... me, I like the road gap...great run in, great launch, good landing, fun...

Hey Portland monkies, I am coming to visit my family in late July and really want to do some riding. I miss dirt, colorado is rock and gravel around me.

Anyway, would love to meet up with you guys for a PC day, the problem is I don't really want to ship my big bike for one or two days of riding. I also have a SS chameleon that would be far easier and cheaper to pack, but am not sure how limiting a hardtail will be.

cool, i will definitley try. I know that there will be some stuff that I would try on the big bike and less likely on the HT, which will piss me off if I don't.

Just as long as it is not super huck oriented (all the good trails have drops over say 6') I will be happy on the HT.

Yeah, I get to thinking sometimes too. It gets me into more trouble than it's worth- I could get hurt riding my bike, crossing the road, driving my car, hell, even eating a hamburger...... but which one would be the most fun? At least if you're riding and you get hurt you're having some fun and it wouldn't be some pointless injury.

Hey guys, just got back from riding. Went to the new Forest Grove skatepark, then the dogwood park dirt jumps in Cornelius, then Beaverton skatepark.
Toshi, I think you would like the F.G. park, lots of trialsy type obstacles. My friend Kevin who does that kind of stuff had a good time. They are in the process of building dirt jumps at the park as well.
Zane those stair gaps were nothing, wait till next time!
Post Canyon, very wet, slippery obstacles, lots of puddles, but some of the trails were fine.

i went down to ride the stuff on the discovery trail today to find it was all torn down. I know a few people from here like zane got to ride some of the more recent stuff. There wasnt lots there, but there was enough to have some fun. Whoever pulled it out did a lot of work hauling out all the wood and filling in all the holes and such which means it was probably the city.

On a different note... does anyone want to do some riding this week at larch or leadbetter or someplace fairly local?

zane
06-02-2004, 12:06 PM
wow, that's pretty lame about discovery. Last time I was there was about 3 weeks ago, it was looking pretty good. Except there were a ton of little kids on bmx machines trying to build stuff- they had already torn down the ladder drop in the 2nd area so we scared them away with our big bikes.

eknomf- Answer your phone! I tried to call you this past weekend to go ride some urban, and 3 weekends ago to hit up larch (it ended up raining...). I have your mom's number, PM me a different one if you're not there anymore.

eknomf
06-02-2004, 02:51 PM
yeah i think part of its demise was due to the fact that poorly built stuff was popping up right by and in some cases on the walking trails.. probably because of some of the kids you saw. And im not usually around to answer my phone so you usually have to leave a message.

The Wendy's jumps are located in Vancouver on fourth plain across the street from Barnes and Nobles, Dick Hannah auto mall, and Winco Foods, behind the Wendy's. Heading east on fourth plain turn right (south) at the light (might be 78th st). There is a tire shop and a Blimpy's, park on the side street.
The jumps are really sandy so it is best to go there when it is wet out. I started these jumps back in '91 and have tried to design in good water runn-off to keep puddles away from the trails. I haven't lived there or worked on them in years so don't blame me for any weird stuff.
Here's an old picture of me at Wendy's. This jump is long gone but there are some nice other ones there.

in other news, TWISTED, ekmonkf (sorry if misspelling it), zane and i had a great time up in post canyon today. tim managed to break his frame on the second hit of the day so graciously drove shuttle duty, ryan loaned me his front wheel, and all helped out at the start of the ride when my evil was switched from a rigid, brakeless, single speed urban machine to a huckarific downhill hardtail, replete with monster t, huge tires, and even brakes. imagine that :D . thanks!

in riding news, it was a bit wet so some wooden obstacles were slippery, but on the whole the place was very rideable and very fun. also, ryan was ripping it up on his new/used scream w/'03 monster up front. and, in personal riding news, my '01 monster t didn't bottom out or dip into its last 1" of travel even on the (big for me) lower gp drops. props to marzocchi. if only it didn't send my handlebars to the sky...

I don't get it. I grew up in Portland, been riding bikes here 29 years (bmx then mtb) and it seems like you have to be in some kind of click just to hear about races. Why aren't there race flyers posted at every bike shop in town? Hell, post them at Fred Meyers and Wal Mart too.
It looks like the only racing I'll be doing is at Whistler, they advertise all over the place.

Hello MTB'ers,

The Oregonian is in the process of putting together a story about us enthusiasts and our sport. What they need is some photo's of someone actually riding on a trail in the Mt Hood area. If anyone has a ride planned for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, please contact Michelle Cole at 503-294-5143 or michellecole@news.oregonian.com <mailto:michellecole@news.oregonian.com> if you would like to be the willing subject. Your participation would be greatly appreciated AND you'd get a chance to be in the newspaper!

Please refer to Michelle Cole regarding any questions/suggestions. She did say the one thing that may hold up the entire article IS this photo. Please help!

Thanks Twisted. We had a good time out there despite almost fryin' to death. We rode (and pushed) way way up into the woodsy area and ended up on some overgrown jeep trails. We got stuck so we turned around and came down a fun singletrack right on the edge of the cliff. Then we cut over and climbed east a while and found another singletrack with some really fun rocky sections. Nothing too crazy, but definitely made me glad I brought the full squisher. Is there a map of all the singletracks somewhere?
