View Full Version : Mad Cow... Hype or Threat?
I personally think Mad Cow is a load of bull.... I mean in the UK only 130 people got the disease out of tens of millions... and there are cases that occure that can not be directly linked to eating beef... It's prolly a PETA prank anyway.
Hype. But, it does highlight how vulnerable our meat processing and distribution system is. Very easy for contaminated meat to get into multiple products and shipped to numerous states. The more I think about this stuff though, I start leaning towards getting a chest freezer and buying a hog or portion of beef locally. (That’s just overall disgust with meat processing and consumers being so far removed from what’s actually on our plates).

Im sure once you cook it, the germs all get burnt off there anyway. Id still eat it.
Odd - I always pictured Burly as a Raw Meat kind of guy....

Actually that's one of the interesting things about it. MCD is NOT a germ. It's a group of chemicals that the brain starts producing, and scientists still aren't exactly sure how, why, or what it affects. The do know it starts as a result of cannibalism (we used to use ground of cattle byproducts in our cattle feed), and similar diseases have been generated in human societies that practice cannibalism (think Papau New Guinea). Consuming them (in the form of cow, human, or other) triggers production in the consumer... freaky shiznot.
Since it's simply a molecular chain, not even as complex as a virus, you would have to eat your beef blackened all the way through to avoid it if it's in there. And there's no cure.

hype... its been explained to me that you can only get it by eating brain or spinal chord parts, not raw cuts of beef. this means you have to get it from eating sausage. yuuuuuuck. i dont eat that $%^ anyway... i just bought beef tenderloin and filet mignon cuts at the local butcher dirt cheap last night cause he had to lower prices cause everyone is afraid of mad cow. more beef for me! :D :thumb:

that said, i don't think it's a big menace either. just don't gnaw on any brains or vetebrae (btw, italy did outlaw bistecca florentine (aka t-bone) because of the CJD scare a while back...i think because the cut is near the spinal column)

It turns out the cow in question was deboned at a meat shop here in lovely Centralia, WA.
The cow was killed in central Washington, deboned 130 miles away in Centralia and then trucked 80 more miles to Portland Oregon for final processing.
Does anyone else think it's odd that cows travel hundreds of miles just to be processed? I guess it must save money some how. I would think having all the steps of the process on site would make it easier and more cost effective.
I was feeling all superior with my freezer full of elk and bison untill my friend told me that elk and deer can get mad cow too.
The hype or threat part:
Who knows how this will shape up, I do know trading was halted in cattle futures because the price had dropped to it's daily limit. If cattle production slackens too much, grain prices will drop also. Although dairy products are thought to be safe I will guess milk consumption drops too, just because, you know, it comes from cows. This will in turn cause more small dairys to be shut down (they are dropping like flys in my neck of the world) and more large scale dairys to grow. This then further concentrates the cattle population which makes not a bit a difference in the case of mad cow but could be real bad in the case of other cow diseases. So once there are only 5 dairys in Washington and all the cows get some jacked up cow disease and die we will have to drink goats milk, which isn't so bad actually. So yes this hype can turn into a big threat if the public stops eating beef and drinking milk. It looks like what it will lead to is tighter regulations on meat producers and that doesn't bother me a bit.

First off, CJD is not something I worry about getting. You have a better chance of slipping in the shower and dying. Hell, I drive a car nearly every day....I don't even want to think what the chances of a bad thing there is.

You don't get mad cow from eating brains. You get it from eating the flesh of an animal that has eaten brains or nerve tissue.
Beef growers used to feed ground up by-product to cattle (brains, spinal cords, bones, connective tissue etc) this is now illegal. For some reason, and scientists don't entirely know why this causes mad cow.
When a human eats the flesh of an animal with mad cow the human then contracts a laundry list of nastyness.

I think the first part is incorrect...
BSE isn't in the cow's flesh, it is contained in the brain and spinal tissue. The worry is that you end up getting little bits of spinal tissue in the meat when you process it, and then you have prion <I>enhanced</I> hotdogs.

To me it's not so much if it's hype or threat, but why. They thought something was wrong with this cow so they sent it to be tested.
It takes about 10 days to get the results back. Instead of holding the meat out, they sent in onto the processing plant. Why? I understand that if the tests came back clean they would be out the money from the spoiled meat.
To me that money is worth losing instead of having to recall it and sending the public into a panic.
