Putting on pegs

I just picked up a used BMX (my first). I know nothing about working on a BMX, so a couple of questions:

How do you put on pegs? I already have one on the back but need to put one on the front. How do you tighten down the peg as an axel nut? Pluming wrench?

Also, how do sprocket guards work (on a 3-piece crank)? Do they fasten to the sprocket or the crank arms?

The pegs don't thread on.. they go over the axle (don't need a washer anymore) then a nut goes inside the peg to hold it all together. Just a long socket/extender does the trick. Also depending on the peg there might be pins to keep it from spinning. If you're not sure take it to a shop...
