Why are 3 piece cranks better than 1 piece? Is one more durable than the other? When should I upgrade to 3 piece? I race 15 novice, and I weigh about 155lbs.
1 piece are more likely to bend, not as strong, and also not made out of as good materials. Also I've never heard of a sealed bottom bracket for 1 piece cranks. If you're not ruining your 1 piece cranks there's no reason to upgrade, but eventually you will start ruining 1 piece cranks when you start going big.

Yeah I second that. Wait until you bend/break/wear them out and then buy some nice 3-piece cranks.

where do 2 piece fit into the whole equation. are they much stronger than 1 piece? they look like they'd resist bending better.

I thought they were stronger than one piece and lighter than three piece. But that's just guessing/assumptions so I'm not sure.
