After I download a program and install, I end up with 2 files on the desktop, the dmg file and a disk image. What the heck do I do with that disk image?
Also, can I select a default download location other than the desktop?
Mount the disk image and open/run whatever it is after it's mounted. It should automatically mount after unzipping it if it was zipped.
Default location in Safari?

I ran the installer, and the program is now present in my applications folder and I can run it from there. I don't understand the purpose/relationship of this disk image file.

I really haven't figured it out yet myself. Haven't had my Powerbook and OS 10.2.7 for that long yet. I guess it's just a way to have all the files associated with a program on it's own "drive" per say, in one place, from which it can install or just simply store them. You can create disk images with Disk Copy.
