I have a 990 set up with a straight cable and have cleaned/sanded the pads but i cant get good performance with them because of my black rim (i even tried putting soda on the rim). I have an orbital sander and some fine sand paper for metal surfaces. Should i try sanding the black paint off the rim?

Black rims will really never work good. Sanding will help a little bit, but your brakes still wont work even close to how they would with a chrome rim. Id suggest just going and getting a chrome rim.

Eh. I guess ill give it a try. Its just annoying not being able to manual, its almost like im riding brakeless but dont want to admit it. Oh well, sometimes three fingers can get it to lock up. Do you have an recommendations for a chrome rear wheel?

For a back rim, go with the Sun Big City. They rule.

Even with a black rim you should get better performance than that... Three fingers to lock 'em up? Wow. I'd try fiddling with the adjustments a little more.

Good luck!
