windows 2000 stalls/hangs

My windows machine started this behavior a few days ago.

Any time i start a new application (w/ the exception of IE, netscape7, textpad & trillian) my computer basically stops responding for about 2 minutes! :( I've done searches online, updated my machine w/ all the patches, defragged my drive, etc.

I didn't install any new software nor have i changed any hardware, so i can't imagine there are conflicts there, but who knows.

to give you an example of what stalls the machine, it's pretty much every application.
things like:
photoshop
windows media player
winamp
word
quicktime
smartftp
webpages w/ java apps (launches the java panel or whatever)
vegas video

basically everything i use except those i listed first.

any thoughts on this seemingly random behavior?

i'm going to take a look @ the event log & see what's cooking in there...

can someone explain what might prompt something like this to appear? It appears that i'm getting them about every 3-4 mins... my system log is full of them :(

ultra 66 would be your hard drive controller, try reinstalling the udma driver. Otherwise back up and reinstall. I used to be a computer enthusiast, and have taken to just formatting and starting over whenever it gets too screwy.

i went to the promise website, grabbed the win2k driver & tried to install it. windows told me that it in fact it wasn't compatible w/ win2k & therefore couldn't install it :(

Firmware would be the software resident on the PROM on the controller itself, not the operating system driver.

oh - how do i go about changing that? any thoughts?

Dunno who makes your hard drive but I'd head on over to their website and see if they have a firmware update OR if they have a database of common problems where you can see if someone else has had this and what they did.

Based on the error message, your disks are SCSI, and I think the controller is the SCSI controller, which I'm guessing is a separate adapter. You'd want to find the web site of the adapter manufacturer and start looking dor a support or downloads link.

One more question: what operating system, and what patch level?
