Quick release wheel won't lock

The front wheel on my bike is a bontrager corvair (stock on my trek 4900), and the quick release hub just won't tighten sufficiently to lock the wheel in. It's like the plastic cone is stripped ...

Is it repairable or do I need a new hub?

Your hub is fine - it is the skewer that is the problem and I doubt it is stripped. If it is just get a new skewer - they be cheap. But before you do - grasp the other end of the skewer and tighten like a screw with the skewer lever open.

If the plastic end cap is stripped you can just remove it - the the metal part of the cap is threaded and not likely to strip under most conditions. The cap on this item was destroyed in a crash but the skewer is still funtional.

I just got back from the bike shop and they replaced the skewer for $3.
