Can I use the BB tool (insert type) to remove the XTR BB (not 2003) I did not remove the cranks yet but it seems that I need the old school "hook" wrench for lock rings instead.

Another question: Do I need a pin spanner to get the cap off?

Thanks

you're prolly refferring to pre-02 adjutable XTR BB (with needle bearings on one side) right?

if so, these are the 'standard' tools so you don't chew up the edges of the cups and lockring...

as pictured:
shiny thing has a pin spanner to lock or loosen the lockring on the non-drive side...the other side has the 32mm wrench to fit the XTR type BB Cup (left below the wrench)...the lil thingie on the very bottom left of the picture is the tool used to hold the XTR BB Cup tool onto the crankarm by way of threading itself onto the crankbolt...when you're tightening or loosening the spider lockring

Hope this helped

yes pre 02.

So the get the BB off I need the Big Lockring wrench and that special BB tool (it's not the standard one right?)

If so then I am going to have the shop remove it, I bought a cheaper BB to replace it so I wont use the tools again if I buy them.

Thanks

You will need the tools if you plan on removing the big ring/spider for replacement. The big pronged 32mm tool is what is used to remove the spider lockring as well as the drive side cup.

Thanks Guys,

I borrowed the tools from the LBS mentioned by Orven and it worked like a charm.
