View Full Version : 7/8 speed cassette question
Any ideas on how I should set up an 8 speed cassette with 7 speed shifters? I’m figuring that I’ll just use the limit screws to block off one end of the cassette. Will upgrade to 8 speed shifters later.
BTW - my derailear and chain are 8 speed compatible.

I think, but I can't remember for sure, that 7spd thumb shifters had 8 clicks and could be used with an 8spd cassette.

Been riding 7 speed thumbies on an 8 speed drivetrain for years. Run in friction mode and adjust the limit screws on the rear derail. Works great. Someone makes a part, called a ghost shifter I believe, that allows 8 speed indexing on a 7 speed thumb shifter. Hunter posted about it over on BikeForums a while back. Should be able to search and find it.

Did I just hear the singlespeed evangelist confess to fiddling with the dark side? ;)
I'll go track down Hunter's post. Thanks.
