Our gym is getting clipless pedals so I'm going to keep my eye out for a cheap pair of shoes - does it matter, road or mtb?

Shiman RD-36 I think. I'll have to check the exact model # and get back to you. Inexpensive, all black, pretty basic. Diadora makes a good touring shoe that works well for spinning.

I just use my mtb shoe because that's what fits the gym bike.:D

well I know they aren't going to buy FROG pedals, so I need a pair I can throw some spds on. :)

Let's stick to MTB shoes. That way we'll have a use for them besides spinning.
