Cassette tight??

After I installed my new 9-speed cassette and got the nut tight, I noticed I can still wiggle the cogs a bit. I'm thinking they should not have any play at all. Do I need a spacer behind the cassette or something? If so, where do I get such a thing. Any help is already appreciated.

That happens sometimes. I assume you're using the new lockring that came with the cassette. Some older ones are a bit too deep and bottom before they tighten the cassette. I had that same problem but it was my 11 tooth that was a bit missformed. It would not go on quite far enough because the splines were a bit missformed. It was tight but the rest of the cassette was not. I had extras which wirked fine.

Assuming you're talking about grabbing the biggest cog and rocking it back & forth tagent to the hub?
I've had that every time with 9 speeds, regardless of hub freewheel. A little play is normal, like maybe 1mm. Or are you talking about the smaller cogs that aren't attached to the main body?

Freehub bodies also tend to have some amount of play in them, so just a little bit can be considered normal and not harmful.

There shouldn't really be any movement side to side (I'm talking movement parallel to the hub body). There can be a touch of "rocking" of the cassette and hub body that you mainly can feel, not see.


If it really is moving side to side, you can just get some spacers from you LBS and put them between the cassette and hub.
