Any suggestions?

Bring a water bottle and a small towel . Or just use your shirt to wipe the sweat off of your face like I do!

We're trying out a new gym. The spinning room is so cool! They're got about 20 bikes is a small, dark room, lit only by flourescent lighting. Sweeeet!

Every time I see, think or hear about stationary bikes, treadmills, etc. , all I can picture is someone like John Candy on them and the thing coming unlatched and sending him through a wall or something. Does that make me strange or does anyone else get the same vision?

Chris Farley on Saturday Night Live. FUNNY!! His bike comes unlatched and he smashes through a wall. I miss Chris.

I've done quite a bit of spin classes. Think different! Most are intervals. Lots of varied excersises. It is really dependant on the instructor. The music selection varies. A Heart rate monitor helps a lot! You work up a good sweat in no time at all. Bring lots of water and two towels. One for when you're on the bike and one for when you're done!

Get there early to set up the bike properly. I've found very few instructors know the proper way to set up the bike. Try to make it as similar to your bike and you're much better off! Call ahead to see if they let you bring your own pedals or if they have some bikes with SPD clipless available.

Good luck!:D

I think you missed the most important part of setup. Make sure the damn thing is attached to the ground and leave and out just incase she comes loose.

gOOD luck let me know how it goes. Im starting thursday. And the coach is an expert level uscf coach and cat3 road racer. I worked out with him a few times during this past season and now going gungho this off season, he makes me puke.

Yup the setup is important. Heres some tips:

There are 4 different adjustments you can make:

1. Saddle height
2. Fore/aft position of the saddle
3. Bar Height
4. Fore/aft position of the bar

The first two are the most important, start there. The saddle should be high enough that your leg is approx 85% extended at the bottom of the pedal stroke. ie, be sure there is a slight bend at the knee at the bottom of the strok. Improper saddle height could result in knee soreness. Fore/aft position of the saddle is the trickiest. This adjustment IS NOT intended to position you closer or farther away to the handlebar. The goal of this adjusment is to position your body correctly over the pedals. When you are at the front of the pedal stroke (foot farthest forward, crank parallel to the ground), the bump on the bone just below your kneecap (excuse my ignorance of anatomy) should line up directly above the ball of your foot. The ball of your foot should be directly over the pedal axle. Imagine holding your leg in this pedaling position and holding a string to your knee. The string should dangle directly through the ball of your foot and the pedal axle. This is hard to explain without a diagram, sorry if that was confusing.

The bar adjstments are just about comfort. Once the seat is in place adjust the bar to the desired position.

We checked out the room and the bikes quickly. They all have toe clips.

Should I wear a pair of cleatless MTB shoes or my sneakers?

Heidi

Is it possible to swap out and bring your own pedals? It really makes a difference to be clipped in. I'll second the water bringing, I usually drink 2 waterbottles full. If there is a fan in the room, make sure you are not directly in front of it, unless you like hair blowing all over in your face and a strong headwind:) Have fun guys!

Should I wear a pair of cleatless MTB shoes or my sneakers? At the YMCA by me, the bikes have toe clips mounted on dual side pedals. One side flat, the other side SPD. So, you might want to check if that's the case where you are. If so, and you ride SPD (I ride Time), take your bike shoes. Even if not, I would wear bike shoes of some type because of the nice stiff sole.

I love it. I have class tonight. I'm sure you guys will enjoy it.
Great workout. I'm looking for a new instructor. this one plays really crappy music. I wanna hear Godsmack or something....
I recommend a heart monitor. I couldn't believe how hard it was to maintain mine............LOL

I used to be a runner, until all the knee problems started. My Dr. and PT told me to take up cycling instead, less impact. I still jog every so often, it feels good.:D

Heh heh heh....I just went there. It takes you to a porn menu screen. The advertisement spawns have been blocked by our cyber-patrol. So I didn't get to see any boobies.

Getting excited about the class! It's going to hurt like hell!!!

Nope, you'll love it. You can sprint as fast as you can, or crank up the resistance and climb your heart out and not have to worry about anything else, no cars, no rock drops, no turns, just pure work. I love to close my eyes and just ride.

You sound like you're actually stressing about this IAB. Relax dude, it's not like anyone's gonna drop you and you can't get back to your car at the trailhead because you're lost. MBC, slap him around a bit so he quits whinning OK?
